Chapter 6 - A King Disarmed

Elena slowly descended the iron stairs, one agonizing step at a time. Her legs trembled so violently she had to lean her entire weight against the handrail.

By the time she reached the bottom step, Dante was already there. He didn't touch her—not because he didn't want to, but because the look in her eyes held him at bay more effectively than any gun.

"Your arm is broken," she said quietly, her voice flat despite the carnage around them.

"It doesn't matter," Dante rasped. His hands hovered near her waist, shaking. "The baby... are you hurt? Did they touch you?"

"The baby is fighting," she replied, pressing a hand to her stomach. "Which is more than can be said for your security perimeter."

Dante bowed his head. The rain plastered his dark hair to his temples. "I found Bianca’s phone. I know she signaled Falcone. I know about the manifests."

"You knew about the manifests before tonight, Dante. You just didn't want me to know."

"I thought Anthony was dirty," Dante whispered, a confession that tasted like ash on his tongue. "Before he died, Anthony signed those customs releases. I spent six months trying to scrub his name so his memory wouldn't be dragged through the mud. Bianca told me she had the original bills of lading that proved his innocence. She said she was holding them at the Harborview. I went there to buy them back, Elena! I swear on my mother’s soul, I never laid a hand on her!"

Elena looked at him through the gloom. "And you didn't trust me enough to tell me?"

"I wanted to keep you clean!" he shouted, despair cracking his controlled facade. "This filth—the blood, the extortion, the bodies—it belongs to me! You were the only pure thing in my life! I thought if I kept you behind the walls, the rot couldn't reach you!"

"And instead, you locked me in a room with a snake," Elena said, stepping closer. Her voice shook with suppressed fury. "You thought you were protecting me, Dante? A woman who grew up on these docks doesn't need to be kept behind walls. She needs to know where the exits are! You treated me like a decorative bird, and it nearly killed our child!"

Dante fell to his knees in the puddles before her, his head against her hip, ignoring the agony of his fractured arm.

"Forgive me," the most feared man on the North Shore wept against her coat. "Elena, forgive me."

Before she could answer, the beam of three high-intensity vehicle spotlights bathed the cannery in blinding white light.

Outside, the low, rumbling idle of four luxury SUVs shook the ground.

A microphone crackled from a megaphone outside the broken doors.
