Chương 4 - The Uninvited Visitors

At 4:00 PM that afternoon, the security gate at the bottom of my long, winding driveway buzzed.

I opened the live feed on my desk monitor. Standing outside the massive wrought-iron gates were three people: my father, my mother, and Blake.

My father was pacing back and forth, holding his phone to his ear, looking furious. My mother was wringing her hands, looking around at the lush pine trees lining my property with a mixture of awe and resentment. Blake was leaning against his car, looking intensely uncomfortable.

I pressed the intercom button.

"You are trespassing," my voice echoed through the metal speaker at the gate, cool and detached.

My father jumped, rushing up to the camera lens. "Claire! Open this damn gate right now! We need to talk!"

"We have nothing to talk about, Dad," I said. "I am busy working."

"Busy working?!" my father roared, his face turning red under his white hair. "You cancelled your mother's card! You cancelled my club membership! What the hell is wrong with you?! My golf partners told me my card was declined at the bar today! I was disgraced!"

"You told me at dinner that I could afford repairs," I reminded him smoothly. "I decided I would rather afford peace of mind."

My mother stepped up to the camera, her voice high and desperate. "Claire, baby, please! Marissa is hysterical! The event planner called her an hour ago and said the venue was cancelled! She said someone sent a legal letter claiming forgery! Blake’s loan is being called in by the bank! You have to fix this!"

I looked at Blake through the monitor. He shrank back slightly, refusing to look directly at the camera.

"Blake," I said, my voice cutting through the speaker like a blade. "Did you tell my parents that you forged my signature on a municipal permit for my property?"

My father turned and glared at Blake. "What signature?!"

Blake swallowed hard, stammering. "I... I thought it wasn't a big deal! Marissa said Claire always gives us whatever we want! We just needed the permit approved by the deadline!"

"You committed felony document fraud on an eight-million-dollar estate, Blake," I said calmly. "And if you stand on my driveway for another three minutes, my private security team will have the local sheriff's department remove you in handcuffs."

"Claire! You wouldn't arrest your sister's fiancé!" my mother shrieked.

"Marissa made it very clear at dinner that we are no longer family," I replied. "And as far as I am concerned, three strangers are currently harassing me at my front gate."

"Claire!" my father slammed his hand against the intercom box. "I am your father! You owe me everything! I raised you! You wouldn't have this mansion if I hadn't raised you to be tough!"

"You didn't raise me to be tough, Dad," I said softly. "You raised me to be useful. And the second I stopped being useful, you sat by and let your younger daughter throw a bowl of sauce in my face."

I reached over and flicked the intercom switch off.

On the screen, I watched my father scream at the camera, punching the air in frustration. My mother collapsed into tears against the hood of the car, and Blake looked like he was about to throw up on the driveway.

They waited for forty-five minutes, expecting me to break, expecting me to come down the hill in tears, apologizing and handing over my home.

I didn't move. I sat at my desk, drank my tea, and watched them realize that the door had finally been locked from the inside.
