Chương 11 - The Empire of Peace

The night air was warm as my driver pulled my car up the winding driveway of Oakridge.

The estate was illuminated by soft, warm exterior lights, casting long shadows across the limestone walls and the blooming rose gardens. The ancient oak trees rustled gently in the spring breeze coming off the river.

I stepped out of the car and walked up the wide stone steps to my front door.

I entered the grand foyer. The floor was spotless white marble, the high glass walls displaying the twinkling lights of the boats moving along the Hudson River in the dark.

I walked into my quiet kitchen, poured myself a glass of cold water, and walked out onto the glass balcony.

My phone chimed softly in my pocket.

It was a notification from my security system, confirming that all gates were locked, all perimeter sensors were active, and the property was entirely secure.

Below that was an email from my lead financial advisor, informing me that my investment portfolio had officially surpassed thirty million dollars.

I looked down at the phone, then turned it off, setting it on the small outdoor table beside me.

I leaned against the glass railing, taking a deep breath of the sweet, fresh night air.

For twelve years, I had thought that eight million dollars bought a house. But as I stood there in the absolute, beautiful silence of the night, I realized the truth.

Eight million dollars had not bought the limestone, the glass, or the land.

It had bought my freedom. It had bought my dignity. And most importantly, it had bought my peace.

I looked out over the dark river, smiled softly to myself, and walked inside, closing the door firmly behind me.
