Chapter 9 - The Trial of Silence

Six weeks later, the preliminary hearing convened in Municipal Courtroom 3B.

I sat at the prosecution table wearing a tailored navy suit that hid my surgical scar. Clara was safe at home with my sister, thriving and gaining weight by the ounce. Across the aisle sat Evelyn Mercer, clad in an orange correctional jumpsuit, her silver hair unwashed and stringy. Mark sat two benches behind her, wearing an ill-fitting suit, isolated from both his mother and me.

"The defense claims that Mrs. Evelyn Mercer was merely suffering from a sleep-induced confusion and acted without malicious intent," Evelyn’s public defender argued, addressing the judge. "The cutting of the maternity band was an attempt to alleviate constriction."

Prosecutor Alvarez stood up calmly. He didn't offer a speech; he simply connected his tablet to the courtroom audio system.

The smart speaker’s automated cloud recording echoed through the high-ceilinged room:

*Audio Log 03:14:22 AM:*

*(Sound of heavy glass cracking, followed by Elena's sharp gasp.)*

*Elena's voice: "Evelyn, stop! You're cutting the band—the baby—"*

*Evelyn's voice: "Be quiet, you dramatic little parasite. You think this child gives you leverage over my son? You will stay in this bathroom until I decide you're worthy of an ambulance."*

*Mark's voice: "Mother, just take her phone. I don't want the neighbors hearing the siren."*

The courtroom was utterly silent. The court reporter stopped typing for a split second, her eyes wide with shock.

On the defense bench, Evelyn’s lawyer slowly lowered his pen, staring down at his legal pad. He knew there was nothing left to defend.

Mark buried his face in his hands, trembling visibly. He suddenly stood up, blurting out, "Your Honor, I want to cooperate! She made me do it! She threatened to take the deed to my house! I didn't want Elena to get hurt!"

"Sit down, Mr. Mercer, or I will hold you in contempt!" the judge slammed his gavel, his eyes blazing with disgust.

The judge looked directly at Evelyn. "Bail remains revoked. Given the digital evidence of premeditated depravity, aggravated domestic assault on a pregnant individual, and intentional tampering with life-saving communications, this court orders Mrs. Evelyn Mercer held over for criminal trial on all counts without bail."

Evelyn glared across the aisle at me, her lips trembling with unexpressed rage. I looked right through her, feeling nothing at all—no hatred, no fear, only the cold, clear indifference one feels toward an extinguished spark.
