Chapter 7 - The Paper Shield

By afternoon, the anesthesia had worn off, replaced by the deep, aching soreness of abdominal surgery. The mirror wound on my cheek had been closed with seven neat stitches.
My best friend and attorney, Sarah Lindqvist, swept into the recovery room carrying a leather briefcase and an enormous bouquet of white lilies. Her face was set in grim determination.
"I saw Clara through the NICU glass," Sarah said, dropping her bag and embracing me with extreme care to avoid my incision. "She has your chin, Elena. And she is fierce."
"Tell me about the legal side," I said, leaning back against the raised pillows. "Don't sugarcoat it."
Sarah pulled out a thick stack of documents. "The judge granted an Emergency Protective Order. Mark and Evelyn cannot come within five hundred yards of you, Clara, or this hospital. Mark posted bail an hour ago—his uncle put up the collateral. But Evelyn was denied bail due to the severity of the felony assault charges and previous unfiled complaints from Mark's ex-fiancée."
"She had a record?" I asked, stunned.
"Not a criminal record, but two domestic disturbance calls from six years ago. The pattern was identical: isolating the partner, controlling finances, weaponizing sleep deprivation." Sarah slid another document across the blanket. "And then there’s this. We pulled the bank records."
I stared at the paperwork. "What is it?"
"Two weeks ago, Evelyn added herself as an authorized user on your joint savings account. Three days ago, Mark transferred forty thousand dollars—your entire maternity leave fund—into an account under Evelyn’s name."
The betrayal struck harder than any physical blow. Mark had not just stood by while his mother cut my band; he had actively financed my financial entrapment. They intended to keep me helpless, dependent, and broken so they could claim primary custody of the baby once she was born.
"Empty it back," I commanded, my voice turning to steel. "Freeze the accounts. File for immediate emergency sole custody and an expedited divorce filing on grounds of domestic violence and cruel and inhuman treatment."

Sarah smiled, a predatory, brilliant grin. "Already drafted. Sign here."
