Chapter 2 - The Door Flung Wide

Mark did not run to help me; he ran to save himself.

The heavy thump of his bare feet echoed across the hardwood floor toward the foyer. Through the bathroom door, I heard the frantic rattle of deadbolts disengaging. He flung the front door wide open, desperate to appear compliant the second emergency sirens began wailing in the distance. He knew that tampering with a 911 call was a felony; he knew the smart speaker had captured his excuses.

In the bathroom, Evelyn stood paralyzed, her hand still hovering near the outlet. Her manicured fingers were trembling, not from remorse, but from the sudden collapse of her absolute control.

"You did this deliberately," she hissed, lowering her voice into a venomous whisper. "You set this trap. You used that machine to spy on this family."

"I was dying, Evelyn," I whispered through cracked lips, pressing a towel to the open gash on my cheek. The fabric turned scarlet instantly. Another contraction ripped across my abdomen, sharp as broken glass, dragging me to my knees. The severed maternity support band lay sprawled across the tile like an umbilical cord cut too soon.

"Step back from the patient!" a commanding voice boomed through the hallway.

Two paramedics entered first, their heavy boots thudding against the floor, followed immediately by two uniformed police officers. The lead paramedic, a woman with keen, no-nonsense eyes, knelt beside me instantly.

"Ma'am, keep breathing. My name is Diaz. We’ve got you," she said, her hands moving with practiced efficiency to check my vitals and the fetal heart monitor.

Evelyn immediately switched her posture, raising both hands to her chest in a theatrical display of maternal distress. "Thank God you're here! My daughter-in-law fell against the mirror during a hysterical fit. I was trying to cut her out of that tight garment so she could breathe—"

"Quiet, ma'am," the taller police officer barked, stepping directly between Evelyn and me. His gaze shifted from the shattered glass on the vanity to the fresh blood smeared along the brass frame, and finally to the kitchen shears sitting beside the sink. "Dispatch recorded the audio. We heard the threat. We heard the speaker unplugging attempt."

Mark slunk into the room, his eyes wide and vacant. "I... I unlocked the door. I cooperated. Officer, my wife is high-risk, she panics easily—"

"Officers," I gasped, clutching Diaz’s forearm. "They canceled the ambulance twice. My phone is locked in the kitchen drawer. Check the smart hub logs."

The officer turned his flashlight toward the bloodied mirror, then nodded to his partner. "Detain both of them. Separate rooms. Now."
