Chapter 5 - The First Breath

The operating room was a world of sterile steel and rhythmic beeping. I couldn't feel the incisions, only a strange, dull pulling pressure that rocked my shoulders.

I stared fixated at the white ceiling tiles, counting the tiny perforations to keep from falling into shock. Every tick of the wall clock felt like an eternity. I prayed silently, promising whatever gods existed that if my daughter lived, I would never allow a single toxic shadow from the Mercer family to cross her path again.

"Suction ready," Dr. Chen commanded. "She's coming. Time is 4:18 AM."

A moment of deafening, breathless silence hung over the room. No one spoke. The team gathered near the radiant warmer.

Then, breaking through the hum of medical machinery, came a sharp, high-pitched cry.

It was thin, indignant, and absolutely alive.

Tears spilled over the sides of my temples, soaking into the surgical cap. "Is that her?"

"That’s your girl," Dr. Chen laughed, her voice thick with emotion. She lifted a tiny, red, vernix-covered miracle over the blue drape for half a second. "She's small, four pounds eleven ounces, but her lungs are roaring."

The pediatric team swarmed the warmer, swaddling her, checking her oxygen, clearing her tiny airways. A nurse brought her over to my cheek for a fleeting second. Her skin was warm, softer than silk, smelling of life and new beginnings. I pressed my trembling lips against her forehead, leaving a faint stain of my sweat and tears.

"Clara," I whispered. "Your name is Clara."

"She needs to go to the NICU for monitoring, Mama," the neonatologist said gently. "She’s breathing on her own, but she needs an incubator."

"Go with her," I nodded, watching them wheel the tiny clear bassinet out the double doors.

As Dr. Chen began closing the incision, the hospital social worker reappeared at my head. "Elena, Detective Miller from the domestic violence unit is outside. When you are in recovery, he needs your signature to enforce an Emergency Protective Order against both Mark and Evelyn Mercer. They are currently being held at the county detention center."

"Bring me the pen," I said. My voice did not shake.
