Chapter 5 - The Social Autopsy

At 9:00 AM, the Manhattan Criminal Courts Building was surrounded by a swarm of news vans, satellite trucks, and hundreds of photographers. Word had leaked through every major financial and social wire: Daniel Vance, the golden-boy entrepreneur married to the reclusive daughter of Alexander Hale, had been arrested alongside society it-girl Vanessa Sterling for domestic torture and multi-million-dollar grand larceny.
Inside the courthouse basement, Vanessa had finally been transferred to a private consultation room. Her makeup was gone, her platinum-blonde hair was tangled in greasy knots, and she was wrapped in a cheap institutional wool blanket.
When the heavy steel door opened, she scrambled up, expecting her family lawyer.
Instead, I walked in.
I was wearing a tailored ivory wool coat, draped over my shoulders to protect my bandaged back, a black silk turtleneck, and pearl earrings that had belonged to my mother. Behind me, Arthur Pendleton pulled out a chair, and I sat down with absolute poise.
Vanessa froze. Her eyes widened, darts of hatred and terror flashing across her pale face.
"You," she hissed, clutching the blanket around her chest. "Look at you. You think you've won? Daniel never loved you! Not for a single second! He laughed at you every night in my bed! He called you a pathetic, spineless heiress who didn't know how to satisfy a man!"
"Is that why you stole forty million dollars from him?" I asked quietly.
The sneer on Vanessa's lips vanished instantly. The color drained from her cheeks until she looked like chalk. "W-what?"
Arthur dropped a thick manila folder onto the metal table between us with a heavy thud.
"Account numbers, Vanessa," I said, leaning forward just enough to pin her with my gaze. "Every offshore transfer Julian handled. The Dubai penthouses. The Swiss safety deposit boxes. The private jet manifests. Did you really think my father wouldn't notice fifty million dollars missing from his own subsidiaries?"
"I... I don't know what you're talking about—"
"Daniel thought you were his muse," I said, my voice smooth and chillingly soft. "He thought you were the prize he deserved for tolerating me. He whipped me with his belt last night because you pouted and told him I looked down on you. And the entire time, you were planning to board a plane in five days and leave him to rot in federal prison for your debts."
Vanessa’s breath came in ragged, shallow gasps. "Clara... Clara, please. It was Julian's idea! My brother forced me! Daniel was unstable, he was aggressive, I was terrified of him!"
"Save the performance for the jury," I said, standing up smoothly. "Oh, and one more thing. Your family's townhouse on East 72nd Street? The deed was held as secondary guarantee by Vance Capital. Daniel defaulted. Hale Real Estate bought the underlying debt this morning for sixty cents on the dollar. Your parents were served an eviction notice forty-five minutes ago."
Vanessa fell to her knees, her manicured fingers clawing at the hem of my coat. "No! My mother is seventy years old! You can't do this! Please, Clara! Have mercy!"
I stepped back, allowing the wool of my coat to slide out of her desperate grip.
"Mercy, Vanessa?" I whispered. "I begged Daniel for mercy on the fifteenth strike. Do you remember what you said?"

Her eyes widened in horror as the memory hit her.
"'Make it twenty, Danny. Show her who owns this house.'" I repeated her exact words with a dead, hollow smile. "Now you know who owns it."
