Chapter 10 - The Boardroom Reclaim

On Monday morning at precisely 8:30 AM, the glass double doors of Hale Tower’s 60th-floor boardroom swung open.

Twenty-two senior executives, managing directors, and majority partners—all men and women who had whispered behind my back for years, who had flattered Daniel and treated me like a decorative ornament—fell instantly silent.

I walked into the room wearing a bespoke charcoal Saint Laurent pantsuit, my dark hair pulled back into a severe, elegant chignon. My father walked half a step behind me, deliberately ceding the head of the mahogany conference table.

I pulled out the leather high-backed chair at the head of the table and sat down.

Arthur Pendleton stood to my left, placing a heavy stack of folders before each director.

"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen," I said, my voice commanding and crisp, echoing off the acoustic glass panels. "As you are all aware, the Vance Capital subsidiary has been liquidated. Its assets, patents, and client portfolios have been absorbed directly back into Hale Industries Core Holdings."

Several older board members exchanged nervous, uneasy glances. Julian Ross, a long-time crony of Daniel's father who had profited handsomely off the fraudulent shell companies, cleared his throat.

"Clara... Miss Hale," Ross stammered, offering a sycophantic smile. "We are all deeply, deeply grieved by the terrible ordeal you suffered. Daniel Vance was a monster who deceived us all. We are entirely at your service to help guide the transition."

"You didn't seem grieved last month, Julian," I said, sliding a document across the table toward him. "When you authorized a five-million-dollar unsecured line of credit to Daniel's offshore shell company in the Caymans without board approval."

Ross’s smile curdled. His hands began to shake as he looked down at the document bearing his personal signature.

"You have five minutes to tender your resignation from this board and all affiliated committees," I said coldly. "If your signed resignation is not on Arthur's desk by eight-forty, the DA's office will add your name to Daniel’s federal indictment for conspiracy."

Ross looked frantically at my father, who sat quietly at the other end of the table, sipping his espresso, not even looking up.

"I... I’ll have it signed immediately," Ross choked out, standing up so abruptly his chair nearly toppled over, fleeing the boardroom with his head bowed in disgrace.

I turned my gaze slowly across the remaining twenty-one directors. Every single one of them lowered their eyes, unable to meet my stare.

"Any other questions?" I asked.

Silence filled the room.

"Good. Now, let's discuss fourth-quarter earnings."
