Chapter 11 - The Shadow Behind the Wall

Three weeks later, Daniel Vance sat in an interrogation booth at the Manhattan Detention Complex, waiting for the transport van that would take him upstate to begin serving his twenty-five-year sentence at Sing Sing.
The door opened.
It was not a guard. It was a man in an impeccably tailored black cashmere coat, wearing leather gloves and carrying an encrypted satellite phone. He didn't introduce himself. He sat down opposite Daniel, placed the phone on the table, and looked at him through dark, impenetrable sunglasses.
Daniel frowned, his instincts screaming in fear. "Who are you? I already signed the plea. I don't have anything left to give anyone."
The man leaned forward, his voice a smooth, cultured whisper with a faint European accent. "You were an amateur, Daniel. You took forty million dollars from Hale subsidiaries when our network had planned for you to siphon four hundred million."
Daniel's heart stopped. His breath hitched in his throat. "Our... our network? Vanessa said—"
"Vanessa Sterling was an operative paid to keep your vanity stroked until the entire offshore infrastructure was drained," the stranger said coldly. "You ruined seven months of delicate positioning because you couldn't control your temper with a riding crop."
Daniel scrambled back against his chair, his mind spinning into chaotic terror. "Vanessa wasn't working alone?! Who are you?!"
"That doesn't concern you anymore," the stranger said, sliding an envelope across the metal table. "Inside this envelope is a cashier’s check drawn on an anonymous private bank in Zurich for fifty million dollars. Bail has been revoked for your state charges, yes. But an emergency writ of habeas corpus and an appeal of jurisdictional overreach has just been filed in Federal Court by the Solicitor General's former partner."
Daniel stared at the envelope, trembling. "Someone... someone is breaking me out through the courts? Why? Alexander Hale will kill you!"
The man stood up, adjusting his cuffs. "Alexander Hale thinks he's the only sovereign in New York. He forgot that every empire has traitors inside its own walls."
At that exact second, forty miles away in Bedford, I was sitting by the fireplace in my father's study, reading through the latest Hale Global asset reports.
My private phone buzzed on the mahogany table.
It was an unknown, encrypted number.
I picked it up and tapped the screen.
There was no text, only a single photograph taken from inside the Hale estate just ten minutes ago. It showed my father sitting in his garden greenhouse, drinking tea, with a red laser sight centered directly over his chest.

Beneath the photograph, a message appeared:
*“You should have looked closer at the board, Clara. Daniel was only the bait. Welcome to the real war.”*
