Chapter 3 - The Iron Cage

The holding cell in the basement of Manhattan’s Central Booking smelled of disinfectant, cold vomit, and oxidized copper. Daniel Vance sat huddled on the rusted metal bench, shivering violently despite the oppressive heat of the subterranean precinct.

His phone had been confiscated, his Rolex Daytona stripped from his wrist, his bespoke Italian leather shoes tossed into an evidence bin. In their place, he wore orange paper slip-ons and a stained canvas jumpsuit that chafed against his pampered skin.

Through the iron bars across the corridor, Vanessa was screaming until her vocal cords shredded.

"Do you know who my family is?!" she shrieked at a bored correction officer. "My uncle is a judge in the Second Circuit! Daniel, tell them! Tell them Clara attacked me! Tell them she went crazy and you were defending me!"

Daniel slowly lifted his head. His eyes were bloodshot, sunken into hollow sockets. For the first time in his life, the seductive illusion of his own importance had completely evaporated.

"Shut up, Vanessa," Daniel rasped.

"What did you say to me?!" she shrieked, pressing her tear-stained, mascara-streaked face against the bars. "You promised me everything! You said that plain, boring bitch had no spine! You said her father was an old man who didn't care about her anymore!"

"I told you to shut your goddamn mouth!" Daniel screamed, lunging to the bars of his cell, rattling the iron until his knuckles bruised. "Alexander Hale bought the governor's campaign! He owns the banks holding my family's mortgages! He owns the firm where your father works as a junior partner! We are dead! Do you hear me?! We are already corpses!"

The heavy steel door at the end of the cellblock buzzed open. Footsteps echoed on the concrete.

It wasn't a public defender. It was Arthur Pendleton, accompanied by the Manhattan District Attorney, Marcus Thorne—a man known as the city’s most ruthless prosecutor, and a godson of Alexander Hale.

Daniel dropped to his knees, pressing his face between the rusted bars. "Arthur! Arthur, please! Let me talk to Clara! It was a mistake! Vanessa poisoned my mind, she put something in my drink, she manipulated me! I love Clara! I’ll sign whatever you want—an apology, a full transfer of my assets—"

"What assets, Mr. Vance?" Arthur asked mildly, stopping just out of Daniel's reach. He opened a leather folder. "As of midnight, Vance Capital's primary line of credit was called in by JPMorgan Chase. The collateral—your family’s estate in Greenwich—has been seized by Hale Financial for default of mortgage covenants. Your brothers have been terminated from their executive roles at Apex Holdings. Your mother’s luxury vehicle lease has been canceled, and the car was repossessed from her driveway twenty minutes ago."

Daniel’s jaw dropped. "My mother? She has a heart condition!"

"Then she should avoid reading tomorrow’s Wall Street Journal," Arthur replied without an ounce of warmth. "Because the morning edition features a four-page front-page exposé on your seven-year history of wire fraud, securities manipulation, and offshore embezzlement from the Hale Charitable Trust."

Daniel’s face drained of every drop of blood. "That carries... that carries thirty years."

Marcus Thorne stepped forward, his eyes cold as granite. "Thirty-five, Daniel. And that's before we count the felony assault, torture, and attempted second-degree murder charges for what you did to Clara tonight. No bail. No plea bargains. Alexander Hale told me to ensure you don't see sunlight until your hair is snow-white. Sleep well."
