Chapter 9 - The Confrontation in Suite 402

Derek Whitmore stood in the threshold.
He was unrecognizable. His designer clothes were soaked with rain and grime, his gray cashmere sweater torn at the shoulder. A jagged cut ran along his hairline, dripping dark blood down his temple, and his eyes were wide, dilated, burning with an unhinged, feral madness. In his right hand, he held a heavy iron maintenance wrench he had ripped from the basement boiler room.
Behind him in the dimly lit hall, one of our private security guards lay motionless against the wall, groaning in pain.
"Drop the weapon! Drop it now!" the remaining guard shouted, leveling his Glock directly at Derek’s chest.
Derek didn't even look at the gun. His eyes were locked on me, standing by the edge of the bed in my pale blue hospital gown, one hand resting over the curve of my unborn child.
"You took everything," Derek whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying, breathless rage. "My company. My money. My mother’s house. You gave it to Vance. You gave it to the feds."
"You took it from yourself, Derek," I said, keeping my voice utterly level, forcing every ounce of terror down into the darkest corner of my gut. "The moment you stole the first dollar from our son’s trust. The moment you brought that woman into our home."
"Our home?" He took a step forward, his boot tracking wet, black grease onto the white floor. "It was *my* home! I built the Whitmore legacy! You were just an ornament, Claire! An obedient little broodmare to give me heirs and keep your grandfather's money quiet!"
"Sir, take one more step and I will fire!" the guard warned, his arms braced, the weapon steady.
"Go ahead!" Derek screamed, tearing his sweater open with his free hand, his face contorting into an ugly, spitting mask of hatred. "Shoot me! I’m ruined anyway! But she doesn't get to walk out of here! She doesn't get to take my children to Maine and watch me rot in a cage!"
He lunged.
The guard fired. The report of the weapon inside the enclosed room was deafening, a concussive crack that shattered the glass of the bedside water pitcher.
The bullet caught Derek in the right shoulder, spinning him halfway around with the impact. The heavy iron wrench slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the linoleum. But the momentum of his charge carried him forward. He crashed directly into the guard, knocking the smaller man backward into the medical monitors.
The equipment toppled with a screech of tearing wires and shattering screens. The guard’s head struck the steel bedside frame, his eyes rolling back as he slumped unconscious to the floor.
Derek dropped to his knees, clutching his bleeding shoulder, his breath coming in ragged, bloody gasps. He looked up at me from the floor, his face white with shock and agony, the crimson stain spreading rapidly across his torn gray sweater.
"Claire..." he wheezed, the madness momentarily punctured by the reality of lead and torn muscle. "Claire... help me..."
I didn't step back. I didn't scream.
I walked forward until I was standing directly over him. I looked down at the man I had loved, the man who had promised to cherish me, the man who had stood by while his mistress tried to destroy our family.
I reached down and picked up the heavy iron wrench from the floor. Its cold steel felt balanced and heavy in my hand.
Derek flinched, pulling his arm over his face, shrinking against the overturned medical cart like the coward he had always been beneath his bespoke armor. "Don't... Claire, please..."
"You are nothing, Derek," I whispered, the words dropping like stones into the ruined room. "You were never a builder. You were only a parasite."
Heavy footsteps pounded down the hall—a dozen pairs of tactical boots.
"SVU! Police! Down on the floor!"
Flashlight beams swept into the room, illuminating the smoke, the blood, and the fallen machinery. Three tactical officers swarmed through the door, driving Derek flat onto the floor, wrenching his bleeding arms behind his back, clicking heavy steel cuffs over his wrists with violent efficiency.
Detective Miller entered right behind them, his service weapon drawn, his eyes sweeping over the carnage before landing on me.
"Mrs. Whitmore! Are you hit?"
I shook my head slowly, letting the iron wrench slip from my fingers. It landed with a dull thud beside Derek’s bleeding face.
Then, a sudden, warm rush of fluid cascaded down the inside of my legs, soaking through my hospital gown and pooling onto the floor. A blinding, white-hot tear ripped through the center of my pelvis, so violent that my knees buckled beneath me.
"Claire!" Elena’s scream echoed from the bathroom as the door flew open.

"My water broke," I gasped, clutching my stomach as the world began to tilt sideways. "The baby... the baby is coming."
