Chapter 6 - Vanessa's Desperation

The meeting was held under strict conditions that Arthur spent two hours negotiating. Vanessa would not be permitted within two hundred feet of St. Jude’s Hospital. The conversation would take place via a secure, end-to-end encrypted video terminal set up between Arthur’s satellite office and the conference room of Vanessa’s public defender.

At three o'clock that afternoon, Arthur clicked the icon on his laptop screen.

The display flickered to life. Sitting at a plain laminate table across town was Vanessa Cross. The transformation was startling. The immaculate, blow-dried socialite in designer knitwear was gone. In her place was a gaunt, shivering woman in an oversized gray sweatshirt, her bleached hair pulled into an oily, haphazard knot. Her face was gray, stripped of makeup, revealing dark purple hollows beneath her bloodshot eyes. Her hands trembled constantly against the tabletop.

Beside her, a tired-looking public defender leaned over a stack of legal folders.

"Claire," Vanessa rasped, her voice cracking as soon as she saw me sitting in the hospital bed. "Claire, please. You have to listen to me."

"I am listening, Vanessa," I said, my voice empty of emotion. "You have five minutes before Mr. Vance terminates the link."

"It was Derek!" she burst out, her fingers digging into the sleeves of her sweatshirt. "He told me to come to the house! He told me you were going to surrender the shares! He promised me that once you signed, he would finalize the divorce and put the Hamptons property in my name!"

"You tried to rip my son out of my arms," I said, my voice dropping to a deadly whisper that made her flinch even through the digital screen. "You hit me. You knew I was carrying his child."

"He told me you weren't really pregnant!" she sobbed, a hysterical edge creeping into her throat. "He told me you faked the medical records to keep him trapped! He swore on his life that you were using an overseas surrogate and wearing a prosthetic bump to manipulate the board! He gave me the keys to the foyer, Claire! He told me to scare you! He said, 'Break her pride, and she’ll sign anything'!"

Elena, standing behind my shoulder, let out a sickening gasp. "He told her *what*?"

"I have the text messages!" Vanessa shrieked, leaning closer to the camera until her distorted face filled the lens. "I have the voice notes from the night before! He said, 'She’s fragile, Vanessa. One push, and she’ll fold. I’ll make sure the security cameras are turned off.' He didn't know you had that little remote! He thought the foyer was blind!"

Arthur leaned toward the microphone on the laptop. "Ms. Cross, voice notes and text messages are useful, but they do not exonerate you from felony assault. What tangible financial evidence do you have linking Derek Whitmore to the offshore accounts?"

Vanessa looked at her public defender, who gave her a single, tight nod. She reached beneath the table and produced an old, blue USB drive with cracked plastic casing.

"Derek’s personal backup," Vanessa whispered, her breathing ragged. "He kept it in my safe at the downtown apartment. It has every wire transfer from the Montgomery trust going back four years. It has the bank routing numbers in the Cayman Islands and the shell company incorporation papers signed under his mother’s personal power of attorney. Evelyn didn't just know about it—she authorized the transfers when Derek's signatures were flagged by the bank!"

I felt the blood drain from my face. "Evelyn signed them?"

"She had to," Vanessa said, a manic, bitter smile twisting her cracked lips. "Derek’s credit was completely frozen after the hotel development collapsed in Monaco. The only way the Swiss banks would accept the collateral was with Evelyn’s personal indemnity. She used your trust fund to backstop her own family foundation, Claire! The whole Whitmore family is a rot. They have no money left. None! It’s all smoke and borrowed time!"

Arthur’s hands flew over his notebook, scribbling rapid notations. "Ms. Cross, if you surrender that physical drive to my legal team within the hour, we will petition the District Attorney to accept a plea of guilty to simple assault with a recommendation of time served and long-term psychiatric rehabilitation. But if there is a single fabricated document on that drive, the deal evaporates."

"Take it! Take it!" Vanessa wept, sliding the drive across the table toward her attorney. "Just don't let Derek get to me. You don't know what he's like when he loses. He’s crazy, Claire. He kept saying that if he went down, he would take everyone with him. He said he would rather burn the entire Montgomery name to ash than let you walk away with his children."

The screen went black as Arthur severed the connection.

The silence that followed was suffocating. Elena was shaking with rage, her knuckles white where she gripped the bed rail.

"They were going to destroy you completely," Elena whispered, her voice breaking. "They were going to strip everything Dad left us and leave you with nothing."

May you like

"No," I said, looking down at my hands. They were steady. Completely, miraculously steady. "They tried. But they forgot that Grandfather didn't just build a shipping line. He built a fortress."
