Chapter 10 - The Water Breaks

The room transformed into an arena of controlled panic.
Dr. Mercer burst through the door, her surgical scrubs already spattered with sterile wash, flanked by two labor-and-delivery nurses wheeling an emergency transport gurney.
"Placental abruption protocol!" Dr. Mercer barked, barely glancing at the officers pinning Derek to the floor. "She’s thirty-three weeks and four days, sudden membrane rupture following acute trauma! Get her onto the bed! We are going directly to Operating Room 2 for an emergency primary Cesarean!"
Hands lifted me. The pain was unlike anything I had ever experienced—not the rhythmic, building waves of Oliver’s birth, but a continuous, tearing fire that felt as though my lower abdomen was being split open with a dull blade.
"Fetal heart rate is dropping! 110... 105!" a nurse called out, pressing a portable monitor probe against my skin as they wheeled the gurney out of the shattered suite.
As they pushed me through the doorway, my gaze fell for one final second on Derek. He was pinned beneath the knees of two officers, his face pressed against the bloodstained linoleum, his teeth bared in an agony of physical pain and total defeat. His eyes met mine—wide, terrified, knowing that the empire was gone, his freedom was gone, and his bloodline was slipping through his fingers forever.
"Clear the halls!" Dr. Mercer shouted, running alongside the gurney as the wheels flew down the central corridor toward the surgical wing.
Elena ran on my left, holding Oliver tightly against her chest with one arm while her other hand gripped mine with crushing intensity. "Hold on, Claire! Just hold on! You're almost there!"
"Oliver..." I gasped, the fluorescent lights above strobing like lightning bolts through my fading vision.
"He's with me! He’s safe! I won't let go of him, I swear to God I won't!" Elena cried, tears streaming down her cheeks.
Arthur appeared at the double doors of the surgical airlock, his trench coat gone, his tie loosened, his phone still pressed to his ear. "The federal magistrate just signed the unsealed indictments, Claire! It’s done! The family foundation is frozen! You won! Now bring that girl into the world!"
The heavy steel airlock doors slammed shut, cutting off Elena, Oliver, and Arthur.
The warmth of the hallway vanished, replaced by the freezing, stainless-steel chill of Operating Room 2. The glare of the overhead surgical lamps was blinding, two massive circular suns of white heat.
"Transfer on three! One, two, three!"
I was shifted onto the narrow, cold operating table. A blue paper curtain was erected across my chest, cutting off my view of my lower body. An anesthesiologist appeared above my head, his eyes calm behind his clear plastic shield.
"Claire, I’m Dr. Chen. We don't have time for an epidural. We’re administering rapid-sequence general anesthesia. You’re going to feel a cold sensation in your IV, and then you’re going to sleep."
"Is she... is my baby going to survive?" I begged, my fingers digging into the rubber edge of the table as another wave of tearing pain ripped through my core.
"We’re going to take care of her," Dr. Mercer’s voice came from behind the blue drape, calm, steady, and resolute. "You fought for her, Claire. Now let us bring her home."
The cold liquid entered my vein. It felt like liquid nitrogen creeping up my arm, over my shoulder, into my neck. The harsh lights above began to spin, blurring into a whirlpool of silver and gold. The frantic beeping of the heart monitor slowed in my ears, replaced by the steady, deep sound of ocean waves breaking against the rocky cliffs of my childhood home in Camden.
