Chapter 8 - Derek's Desperate Gambit

The response was immediate and chaotic. Within four minutes of the call, the hospital room became a tactical command post. Two additional hospital security officers arrived, their radios crackling with urgent static.
"Central monitoring reports Whitmore’s bracelet is still transmitting from the brownstone on 64th Street," Detective Miller’s voice crackled through Arthur’s phone speaker. "A patrol car is pulling up to the residence now to confirm physical visual."
"He’s spoofing the transmitter," I said, sitting upright, ignoring the sharp spasm in my lower back. "Derek used to brag about his security consultants. He had a private security firm in Miami that specialized in digital counter-surveillance. If he wants to cut that monitor, he knows how to loop the signal."
"Claire is right," Elena said, her face pale as paper. "Arthur, we need to move her. Move her and Oliver to the main trauma vault."
"Dr. Mercer said moving her now risks triggering immediate, active labor," Arthur argued, his brow furrowed with immense strain. "The floor is locked down. The elevators are grounded to the ground floor. He cannot access this wing."
Then, without warning, the lights flickered.
Once. Twice.
The hum of the overhead air filtration system died with a low, descending groan. The bright LED panels went dark, replaced instantly by the dull, amber glow of the emergency backup lighting.
"What was that?" Elena gasped, stepping toward the crib and scooping Oliver into her arms. The baby began to whimper, sensing the electric tension in the room.
The guard outside the door knocked twice, then opened it an inch. "Sub-basement transformer tripped. Hospital facility operations is reporting a manual override of the secondary power junction in the mechanical tunnel."
"He's in the building," I whispered.
The realization settled over me not with panic, but with a strange, icy clarity. Derek wasn't coming for a legal settlement anymore. He wasn't coming to negotiate shares or salvage his reputation. The indictment, the exposure of his embezzlement, the betrayal of his mistress—he was entirely stripped of his illusions. He was a cornered animal coming to destroy the source of his ruin.
"Arthur, the service elevator," I said, pointing toward the emergency floor map mounted on the wall near the door. "The service elevator connects directly to the underground utility corridor that leads to the medical waste dock. If the renovation he funded three years ago included that shaft, he has the physical bypass key."
"Officer," Arthur shouted to the guard at the door, "secure the south utility entrance! Now!"
A muffled pop echoed from the far end of the corridor—the unmistakable sound of a heavy steel fire door being forced open with a hydraulic wedge.
"Code Gray, Code Gray, South Maternity Wing," the intercom system buzzed, the automated voice flat and robotic. "Security breach at Service Portal 4."
"Get behind the bed," the guard commanded, drawing his service weapon and standing in the center of the doorway. "Both of you, get down on the floor!"
"No," I said, pulling off the bedsheet and swinging my legs over the edge. The cold linoleum shocked my bare feet. A sharp, burning cramp seized my abdomen, taking my breath away, but I forced my spine straight. "Elena, take Oliver into the en-suite bathroom. Lock the reinforced door. Do not open it for anyone except Arthur."
"Claire, no! I’m not leaving you!" Elena sobbed, clutching Oliver to her chest.
"Move, Elena!" I commanded, my voice carrying the unyielding authority of a mother protecting her young. "Now!"
Elena retreated into the tiled bathroom, the heavy oak door clicking shut, followed by the solid thunk of the deadbolt sliding into place.
Outside in the hallway, the heavy sound of scuffling boots broke out, accompanied by a muffled shout and the crack of a baton striking flesh.
"Step back! Step back—"
A body hit the drywall outside my room with a sickening thud. The guard stationed at my doorway raised his weapon, his finger hovering over the trigger.

The door was kicked inward with terrifying force.
