Chapter 20 - The Unseen Trigger

The ballroom lights suddenly flickered once, twice, and died.

A collective gasp swept through the crowd of eight hundred guests as the grand crystal chandeliers went dark, plunging the vast hall into pitch-black shadow. Only the emergency exit signs glowed with an eerie, blood-red hue along the velvet-lined walls.

Before the backup generators could kick in, a deafening screech of electronic feedback tore through the ballroom’s sound system.

Claire instantly moved close to her father, her hand instinctively finding his forearm. Arthur pulled her behind his broad frame, stepping back against the heavy stone balustrade of the mezzanine, his hand slipping inside his tuxedo jacket where his concealed firearm was holstered.

"Security! Seal the exits!" Arthur shouted, but his voice was drowned out by the rising panic of the guests below.

Then, through the venue’s massive acoustic speakers, a voice spoke.

It wasn't Victor Cross.

It was an older, gravelly, mechanical voice—distorted through an encryption vocoder, but dripping with a chilling, familiar cadence that caused Arthur Vance’s entire body to freeze as though struck by lightning.

*"Good evening, Arthur,"* the voice echoed through the darkness, vibrating against the marble pillars.

Arthur’s breath stopped. Claire felt her father’s arm tremble—a man she had never, in her entire life, seen exhibit a single second of fear.

"That voice..." Arthur whispered, his face turning ghostly pale in the red emergency light. "It's impossible. He died twenty-five years ago."

*"Did you really think Victor Cross was the architect, Arthur?"* the voice chuckled, a cold, rasping rattle that sent shivers down Claire's spine. *"Cross was just an errand boy. You spent seven years dismantling Richard Sterling's petty games, believing you were protecting your daughter. But you forgot where this war truly began. You forgot the debt you owed for what happened in Vienna."*

Claire stared at her father in terror. "Dad... what is he talking about? Who is Vienna?"

Arthur did not answer. His gray eyes were wide, fixed on the red-lit shadows across the mezzanine.

Suddenly, Arthur's private encrypted phone buzzed violently in his pocket. He yanked it out and put it on speaker.

Frank’s frantic voice cut through the static, gunfire echoing in the background:

*"Mr. Vance! Mr. Vance, we're under attack at Vance Ground! They breached the south gate—they have military hardware! They're not after the house, Mr. Vance—they're inside the nursery! They have Lily—"*

A single gunshot cracked over the line.

The call cut to dead, hollow static.

Across the darkened ballroom, a single red laser sight danced across the emerald silk of Claire’s chest, centering directly over her heart.
