Chapter 16 - Confrontation at Blackwood

The intruder broke within twenty minutes in the basement holding room before federal agents even arrived to take him away. He was an operative hired through an intermediary—paid fifty thousand dollars to introduce industrial defoliant into the estate's ventilation system to force an evacuation.
More importantly, he carried an encrypted cell phone that tied back to a prepaid burner purchased twenty-four hours earlier outside Blackwood Federal Penitentiary.
Arthur arranged for Claire to see Richard the following morning. Claire had insisted on going. Arthur had protested at first, but Claire looked him dead in the eyes and said, "I spent four years letting that man make me feel like prey, Dad. If I don't look at him behind bars, I will always be waiting for him to push me down the stairs again."
The visitation room at Blackwood was sterile, smelling of industrial bleach and defeat.
When the heavy steel door opened, Richard Sterling stumbled in, clad in an ill-fitting orange jumpsuit. The man who had once spent thousands on bespoke Italian wool now looked gaunt, greasy, and broken. The swagger was gone, replaced by a hollow, predatory desperation.
He sat across the reinforced acrylic glass, lifting the heavy plastic telephone receiver with shaking hands.
Claire sat down calmly, picking up her receiver. She wore an ivory cashmere sweater and looked vibrant, radiant, and utterly untouchable.
"You look well, Claire," Richard said, a bitter, yellow smile curling his lip. "Living off daddy's blood money while I rot in here."
"I look well because you aren't around to break my bones, Richard," Claire answered calmly. "I'm not here to gloat. I'm here to give you one warning."
Richard scoffed. "A warning? From you? You wouldn't even choose the living room wallpaper without Eleanor's permission!"
"Eleanor is living in a squalid apartment off Route 9, eating frozen dinners," Claire replied, her voice cold and even. "And Victor Cross is sending men to my father's house. Men who carry burner phones linked to this prison."
Richard’s smirk vanished instantly. His pupils dilated in sheer, unadulterated terror. He pressed his face close to the glass, his breath fogging the transparent barrier.
"Claire... listen to me," Richard hissed, his voice dropping into a desperate whisper. "You have to tell your father to let the Cayman accounts go. Tell him to drop the injunction on Cross!"
"Why should he?"
"Because Cross isn't a businessman, Claire!" Richard stammered, his eyes darting toward the prison guards stationed at the door. "He doesn't use lawyers! I only borrowed ten million from him, and he took over everything! He owns judges, he owns governors! If your father keeps pushing, Victor Cross won't just kill you—he will burn Vance Ground to the bedrock and bury you all in unmarked graves!"
Claire leaned forward, staring directly into the terrified eyes of the man who had terrorized her for years.
"Then tell him to hurry," Claire whispered fiercely. "Because my father is already digging his."

She slammed the receiver down onto the cradle, turned her back on her ex-husband, and walked out without looking back.
