Chapter 13 - The Silent Partner

Within forty-eight hours, Vance Ground had shifted from a tranquil country estate into a fortified bastion. Two additional men in civilian clothes, both former colleagues of Arthur’s from the Department of Justice, were stationed along the access road. Lily was taken out of preschool, spending her mornings baking cookies in the kitchen with Maria, the housekeeper, blissfully unaware of the silent perimeter established around her.
In Arthur’s study, the massive mahogany desk was covered in newly declassified banking records, wire transfer slips, and surveillance dossiers. Daniel sat across from Arthur, a laptop glowing in the dim lamplight.
"The paper trail dead-ends in an offshore trust in the Cayman Islands called Vesper Holdings," Daniel reported, rubbing his tired eyes. "The signatory on the primary account isn't Richard, and it isn't anyone with the last name Sterling. It’s an attorney named Julian Vance—no relation to you, Arthur—who works exclusively for Victor Cross."
Claire, sitting in the leather armchair by the fire, leaned forward. "Who is Victor Cross?"
Arthur poured three fingers of bourbon into a tumbler, not to drink, but to hold against his temple as he thought. "Cross is an industrialist who built an empire buying distressed infrastructure. Decades ago, he was investigated for racketeering, contract tampering, and witness intimidation. Every time the government got close, witnesses vanished, or documents spontaneously combusted in warehouse fires. He never gets his hands dirty; he hires intermediaries like Richard Sterling to park his illicit capital."
"So when Richard went down..." Claire began.
"Cross lost sixty million dollars, and his primary financial bridge to the East Coast ports was blown apart," Daniel finished. "Cross doesn't operate on emotions. He operates on leverage. He knows Arthur Vance cannot be bribed, and he knows federal marshals won't back off on Arthur's say-so alone. But he believes you and Lily are Arthur's pressure points."
"He thinks he can use us to force Dad to unfreeze the funds," Claire realized, a sickening wave of anger replacing her fear. "He thinks because I was Richard’s battered wife, I’m an easy target."

Arthur looked at his daughter, his eyes softening with pride and fierce protectiveness. "That is his first and final mistake, Claire. Richard thought you were weak, and look where he sits tonight. If Victor Cross wants a war on Vance ground, we will give him one he cannot buy his way out of."
