Chapter 15 - Poison in the Garden

Three days after the call between Cross and Eleanor, an unseasonably warm afternoon settled over Vance Ground. The security detail was rotating shifts, and Arthur had stepped into the basement cellar to inspect the property's water filtration system.

Claire was in the greenhouse attached to the carriage house, potting winter bulbs. Lily sat on a low wooden bench nearby, humming to herself as she drew pictures with colored wax crayons.

The gate buzzer did not sound, but the perimeter alarm in the main hallway chimed once—a warning that a perimeter sensor had detected movement along the north hedge, near the old orchard.

Claire froze, the trowel suspended in her hand. Her pulse spiked instantly. "Lily, sweetie," she said softly, keeping her voice as steady as silk. "Come stand next to Mommy. Right now."

Lily looked up, her innocent blue eyes wide, sensing the sudden tension. She obediently hopped down from the bench and walked over, clutching Claire's denim apron.

Claire wiped her hands, stepped toward the heavy oak door connecting the greenhouse to the studio, and reached into the hidden compartment behind the seed cabinet—where Arthur had placed a snub-nosed .38 revolver three days ago. Her fingers wrapped around the checkered grip. She hated weapons. She hated violence. But when she looked at Lily, every ounce of hesitation evaporated.

A soft crunch of gravel echoed outside the greenhouse glass.

A shadow passed along the whitewashed panes. It wasn't the uniform silhouette of Frank or the patrol guards. It was a man in dark overalls, carrying what looked like a professional landscaping canister, moving toward the fresh air intake vents of the main residence.

"Stop right there," Claire commanded, stepping through the doorway into the open yard, both hands bracing the revolver, pointed directly at the intruder's center mass.

The man turned sharply. He was young, lean, with cold, dead eyes and a jagged scar splitting his left eyebrow. He froze, his hands hovering near the metal canister.

"You're trespassing on private property," Claire said, her voice ringing clear, devoid of the trembling that had once defined her marriage. "Drop whatever is in your hands, or you will not leave this lawn on your feet."

The man sneered, taking half a step forward. "Little girl, you don't even know how to pull that hammer—"

The heavy metallic snap of a Remington 870 shotgun racking a shell sounded three feet behind the intruder’s right ear.

Arthur Vance emerged from the shadow of the rose arbor, the twelve-gauge leveled squarely at the back of the man's head. Frank appeared from the corner of the barn, his service pistol drawn and locked.

"My daughter asked you a question, son," Arthur said in a voice as soft as crushed velvet and twice as deadly. "And on this property, you obey her."
