Chapter 19 - The Sovereign of Venice

Three months later.
The Grand Canal of Venice shimmered under the golden glow of a late-summer sunset. Gondolas drifted lazily past ancient stone palazzos, while the soft music of violins drifted across the water from the Piazza San Marco.
The nightmare of Vance, Julian, and Elena had been completely scrubbed from our lives. Vance had pled guilty to multiple federal charges, his empire dismantled and liquidated at auction—with Cole-Avery acquiring the prime European assets for fifty cents on the dollar. Elena was serving a four-year sentence at a state correctional facility.
Tonight, the international architectural elite had gathered at the Palazzo Pisani Moretta for the prestigious Biennale d'Architettura.
Adrian and I arrived via a sleek, vintage mahogany water taxi. As the boat pulled up to the private marble dock, a swarm of international photographers illuminated the canal with a symphony of flashes.
I stepped onto the dock wearing a breathtaking midnight-blue velvet gown with a flowing cape of sheer gold embroidery. Beside me, Adrian looked striking in an Italian-tailored tuxedo, his hand catching mine the moment my foot touched the marble steps.
Inside the palace, crystal chandeliers cast warm light over centuries-old frescoes. The European press bowed respectfully as we entered.
The master of ceremonies took the stage, raising a glass of vintage prosecco.
"Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we honor visionaries who do not merely build on the earth, but elevate humanity. For the historic design of the Mediterranean Sustainable Haven, the Gold Lion of Architecture is awarded to Claire Avery!"
The applause that erupted shook the ancient chandeliers.
I walked onto the dais, feeling the weight of the golden trophy in my hands. I looked out over the sea of international architects, princes, and titans of industry. But among all the brilliant faces in that room, my eyes found only one man.
Adrian stood in the front row, his dark eyes shining with an emotion so deep, so profound, it made the trophy in my hands feel secondary. He wasn't clapping out of polite obligation; he was looking at me like a man who had watched his goddess conquer the world.
When I stepped down from the stage, Adrian took my hand and led me through the French doors onto the secluded marble balcony overlooking the Grand Canal.
The cool Venetian breeze lifted the gold embroidery of my gown. Below us, the canal water sparkled like crushed sapphires under the rising moon.
Adrian turned me to face him, his hands resting gently on my waist.
"You conquered Manhattan, Claire," he whispered, his voice rich and deep. "And tonight, you conquered Europe."
"We did it together, Adrian."
"No," he said softly, shaking his head. "The brilliance is entirely yours. I simply had the privilege of holding the umbrella while you made it rain."
He reached inside his tuxedo jacket and pulled out a small, navy-blue velvet box.
My breath caught in my throat.
Adrian dropped to one knee on the ancient Venetian marble, looking up at me with raw, honest devotion. He opened the box to reveal a flawless ten-carat cushion-cut blue diamond ring, surrounded by a halo of micro-pave platinum that mirrored the structural geometry of the lakeside tower we had built together.
"Claire Avery," Adrian said, his voice steady yet filled with profound passion. "You spent years being treated like an afterthought by men who were blind to your light. I want to spend the rest of my life reminding you that you are my center, my partner, and the only woman who will ever rule my world. Will you marry me?"
Tears of pure happiness welled in my eyes. I didn't hesitate for a single heartbeat.
"Yes," I breathed, my voice trembling with joy. "A thousand times, yes."

Adrian rose, his face breaking into the most radiant smile I had ever seen on him, and slid the ring onto my finger before pulling me into his arms, kissing me deeply beneath the stars of Venice as church bells rang across the lagoon.
