Chapter 14 - The Sovereign Gala

Three days later, the high-society battlefield shifted to the historic Metropolitan Museum in Manhattan for the Sovereign Global Infrastructure Summit. It was the premier event of the financial calendar, an exclusive gala where world leaders, sovereign wealth managers, and real estate titans gathered to carve up trillions in international development contracts.

The ballroom was an ocean of black ties, haute couture, and blinding diamonds.

When the double doors opened and Adrian Cole entered with me on his arm, a noticeable hush rippled through the grand room.

I wore an emerald-green silk crepe gown designed by an atelier in Paris, backless and sculpting, accented only by my mother’s sapphire locket, which had been reset by Adrian’s private jeweler into a delicate platinum collar. Adrian matched me with effortless perfection—his bespoke tuxedo sharp, his demeanor calm, commanding, and absolute.

Every eye turned toward us. The whispered rumors from Julian’s pathetic scene outside the tower had reached Manhattan, but seeing us standing together—composed, radiant, and radiating undeniable power—instantly silenced the gossip.

"Look at them," Adrian murmured close to my ear, his hand firm and warm against the small of my back as we made our way down the marble staircase. "They were waiting to see if you would look rattled."

"Are they disappointed?" I asked, a faint, confident smile playing on my lips.

"They're terrified," he whispered back, his thumb caressing my spine. "Because they realize that Julian was never your weakness. He was just your cage. And now that you're out, no one in this room can match you."

Before we could reach the ambassador’s circle, the crowd parted, and Marcus Vance stepped directly into our path.

He held a glass of bourbon in one hand, his imposing figure casting a broad shadow under the chandeliers. At his side, surprisingly, was not a high-society wife, but a legal team composed of the state’s most aggressive regulatory attorneys.

"Adrian," Vance greeted, his voice rumbling with false warmth. "It’s been too long since our bids crossed paths in Zurich."

"Not long enough, Marcus," Adrian replied smoothly, not even blinking. He didn't offer a handshake, maintaining an easy posture that treated Vance like an inconvenient footman rather than a feared corporate predator.

Vance’s eyes flicked over to me, sweeping down my emerald dress with deliberate insolence. "And this must be Claire Avery. The architect everyone is whispering about. You’ve certainly climbed the ladder quickly, my dear. From a crumbling regional firm in Myers Park straight into Adrian Cole’s penthouse. Tell me, do you design the buildings first, or does Adrian simply buy the permits to make your sketches legal?"

The silence around our circle thickened instantly. Nearby dignitaries paused, holding their breaths.

I didn't step back. In fact, I took a half-step forward, tilting my head slightly, my gaze locking onto Vance’s with ice-cold clarity.

"Mr. Vance," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the quieted circle. "I design structures that withstand fifty-ton crosswinds and century-level earthquakes. A man who relies on desperate ex-husbands and paid informants to do his due diligence shouldn't lecture me on foundation work. Your bid on the North River Harbor project fell through yesterday because your load-bearing ratios were off by twelve percent. If you need a remedial consultation on structural physics, my junior draftsmen charge five hundred dollars an hour. I can have my assistant slip you a card."

A muffled snicker broke out among several foreign investors standing nearby.

Vance’s face darkened, a muscle feathering violently along his jaw. He hadn't expected a woman standing in an evening gown to dismantle his recent private commercial failure with such surgical precision.

Before Vance could respond, Adrian stepped into the space between us, his posture turning rigid and lethal.

"Listen to me very carefully, Marcus," Adrian said in a low, resonant voice that chilled the surrounding air. "You can come after my portfolios. You can attempt to short my stock. You can throw every dirty trick in your playbook at my board. But if you ever speak to Claire with disrespect again, I won't just outbid you. I will buy Vance Global, strip it for parts, and leave your name as an auction lot in the bankruptcy court. Do you understand me?"

The raw authority in Adrian’s voice was staggering. It wasn't an empty threat; it was a promise backed by liquid capital that could swallow Vance’s empire whole.

Vance stood frozen, his jaw clenched, before slowly raising his glass in a mockery of a toast. "We’ll see how strong your foundation really is when the ground starts shaking, Cole."

With that, Vance turned on his heel and disappeared into the crowd.

I looked at Adrian, my heart beating with fierce pride. He turned to me, his dark eyes instantly softening from cold steel to pure warmth, reaching out to tuck a loose strand of hair behind my ear.

"You handled him brilliantly," he whispered.

May you like

"We handled him," I corrected, leaning into his touch. "Now let's go win the international contract."
