Chapter 17 - The Unmasking

In the blinding fluorescent glare of the construction site’s primary security trailer, two men sat handcuffed to heavy steel chairs.
One was a rogue environmental contractor who had taken a six-figure bribe.
The other, sitting huddled in the corner, bruised, shivering, and covered in scratches, was Elena Ross.
Beside her, thrown carelessly on the desk, was a waterproof duffel bag containing blueprinted schematics stolen from my studio, an encrypted burner phone, and a satellite radio linked to Marcus Vance’s private security detail.
When the trailer door opened, Elena looked up with wild, terrified eyes.
Adrian and I stepped inside. We were soaked in mud and water, our formal gala attire ruined, but the aura radiating from us was so chilling, so undeniably dominant, that Elena shrank back against the wall as if expecting to be struck.
"Claire..." Elena whimpered, her voice cracking. "Claire, it wasn't my idea! Vance... Vance threatened me! He said if I didn't help his men get inside, he would ruin me!"
I walked over to the desk, not saying a word. I picked up the burner phone, scrolling through the text logs. The instructions from Vance’s right-hand man were explicit: *Flood the south pier. Ensure the blame falls on Julian Sterling's forged signatures. Elena Ross will receive transport to Zurich upon confirmation of structural collapse.*
"You tried to kill thirty workers on the morning shift, Elena," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion. "You tried to drown an entire development just to settle a personal grudge."
"I was desperate!" she screamed, tears cutting through the grime on her cheeks. "You had everything! You took Julian's pride, you took his fortune, you took Cole! Look at you! You're wearing an eight-thousand-dollar gown while I’m living in a rat-infested studio! You were supposed to be the quiet, obedient wife who let me have whatever I wanted! Why couldn't you just stay broken?!"
The sheer narcissism in her words was breathtaking. She genuinely believed she was the victim.
"I didn't take anything from you, Elena," I said softly, looking down at her with cold pity. "You destroyed yourself the moment you thought betrayal was a valid career path. And Julian... where is Julian?"
Elena let out a ragged, hysterical sob. "He tried to stop me tonight at the gate. He grabbed my arm, screaming that he wouldn't let me ruin you again. Vance’s men... they hit him with an iron pipe. They threw him into the trunk of a sedan. I don't know where they took him!"
Adrian stepped forward, his cold dark eyes fixing on the head of his private security detail standing by the door.
"Have state police and federal marshals surround Marcus Vance’s penthouse and private hangar," Adrian ordered in a voice of lethal finality. "Hand this phone and the witness statements directly to the Attorney General. Issue a statewide warrant for kidnapping, corporate sabotage, and conspiracy to commit industrial manslaughter."
He then looked down at Elena.
"As for her," Adrian added coldly, "let the district attorney charge her with full accomplice liability. No bail. No deals."
"No! Claire, please!" Elena shrieked as two burly officers hauled her up from the chair. "Claire, we were friends! For ten years we were best friends! Please don't let them lock me away!"

I turned my back on her as the heavy door slammed shut, her screams vanishing into the cold morning air.
