Chapter 18 - The Fall of Julian Sterling

Dawn broke over the city in streaks of pale violet and silver.
Julian was found three hours later by state troopers, dumped on the grassy embankment of a rural highway twenty miles outside the city limits. He was alive, but barely—suffering from two broken ribs, a concussion, and hypothermia.
At noon, I stood outside the reinforced glass of the private medical ward at the state penitentiary hospital where Julian had been transferred under protective custody. Because of his involvement in the forged site permits and his initial cooperation with Vance's network, he had been formally arrested as an accessory, though his emergency call to me had saved him from the harsher charge of direct conspiracy.
A female guard unlocked the heavy steel door, nodding respectfully to me. "You have five minutes, Mrs. Avery."
I walked in. Julian lay on the hospital bed, hooked up to an IV drip, his face swollen and mottled with purple contusions. When he saw me step into the room, tears leaked from his swollen eyes.
"Claire," he whispered through cracked lips.
I stopped at the foot of his bed. I wore a tailored black trench coat, clean and immaculate, standing tall in the sterile room.
"The doctors said you’ll recover," I said evenly.
"Did... did the site hold?" he asked weakly.
"The site held. Vance’s men were arrested at his private airstrip trying to board a Gulfstream to Dubai. Vance himself is currently in federal custody without bail."
Julian let out a broken, shuddering breath, staring up at the white acoustic ceiling tiles. "I tried to stop them, Claire. When I realized Elena was actually going to destroy the foundation... when I realized people could die... I tried to pull her away. For the first time in my life, I tried to do the right thing."
"I know," I said quietly. "Your call gave us twenty minutes of advance notice. It was the only reason we were on site when the valves were breached. For that, the prosecutor has agreed to reduce your charges to time served under probation."
Julian’s eyes widened with disbelief, fresh tears spilling down his bruised cheeks. "You... you asked them for leniency for me?"
"I didn't do it for you, Julian," I said, my voice steady, cold, and final. "I did it for myself. I did it so there is no outstanding debt between us. No guilt, no lingering shadow, no unfinished business. You are completely free of me. And I am completely free of you."
He reached out a trembling hand toward me from the bed, his fingers curling in the air, unable to reach the fabric of my coat.
"Claire... if I could turn back the clock... to that night at the Harrington... if I could throw that cuff link away..."
"The cuff link was just the symptom, Julian," I interrupted softly. "The disease was who you were. A man who only valued what he had when someone else showed him its true worth."
I turned toward the door, knocking once for the guard.
"Claire!" he cried out, his voice cracking with unbearable regret. "Will I ever see you again?"
I looked back over my shoulder one last time. "No, Julian. This is where your story in my life ends."
May you like
The steel door opened, and I walked out into the corridor, leaving the broken ghost of my past behind forever.
