Chapter 8 - The Interrogation and Unraveling

At 03:00 hours, inside the interrogation suites of the Fairfield Police Department Headquarters, the conspiracy crumbled completely under the weight of federal and state pressure.

Detective Marcus Vance—no relation to Marlene—sat across from Brooke Vance in Interview Room B. On the steel table between them lay a printout of the text messages extracted from Brooke's phone.

"This is your phone, Brooke," Detective Vance said calmly, tapping the paper. "At 14:12 yesterday, you texted your sister Tessa: *'Got the five-gallon jug from Home Depot. Mixed the cleaning vinegar and lamp oil. Smells awful. That should make her scream loud enough for the microphone.'* Do you want to explain that?"

Brooke was sobbing, her designer mascara running down her chin. "It wasn't my idea! It was Marlene’s! Mom told us that Elias had cut Claire out of the estate! She said if we didn't help Claire get custody, the bank was going to seize the boutique in Westport and we’d all be bankrupt!"

"Did your sister Claire object?"

"No!" Brooke shouted, completely unspooling. "Claire was the one who bought the fuel can! Claire said Lily was too smart and would tell the family court judges that Elias was a good father, so we had to make Lily look unhinged on camera! Claire promised us fifty thousand dollars each once the trust was broken!"

In Interview Room A, Marlene was attempting a completely different tactic. She sat with her arms crossed, glaring at the senior prosecutor.

"I am a pillar of this community," Marlene snapped. "My late husband was a superior court judge! You have no right to treat me like a common thug. The child had a violent tantrum. She threw hot soup at me! I had to restrain her for her own protection!"

The prosecutor simply turned a 24-inch monitor toward Marlene and hit play.

The high-definition video from Elias’s doorbell camera filled the screen. Marlene’s own voice blasted through the speakers with horrifying clarity: *“Call for your father. Let’s see if he can save you now.”*

Marlene’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. The arrogance evaporated from her features, replaced by the hollow realization that her life of social prestige had ended forever.

"That video has already been authenticated by federal forensic analysts," the prosecutor said coldly. "The United States Department of Defense has also opened an inquiry, considering Colonel Reed was targeted while on active command duty. You aren't just facing state charges, Marlene. You are looking at federal conspiracy charges, wire fraud, and witness tampering. You will spend the rest of your natural life in a state penitentiary."

By 05:00 hours, all four women had turned on each other. Claire blamed Marlene; Marlene blamed Claire; Brooke and Natalie signed full confessions in exchange for non-capital plea considerations. Every single layer of their scheme was laid bare on official transcripts.
