Chapter 6 - The Confrontation

In the kitchen, Marlene stood frozen behind the island, holding an eight-inch carving knife she had grabbed from the wooden block. Her eyes were wild, bloodshot, and filled with cornered malice.

"Stay back!" Marlene shrieked, waving the blade erratically. "She’s my granddaughter! You abandoned her! You have no right to come into this house and—"

Elias entered the kitchen. He didn't slow his stride.

When Marlene lunged forward, brandishing the knife in a desperate attempt to bluff him, Elias’s hand moved faster than human sight. His left palm struck the inside of her wrist, deflecting the blade upward, while his right forearm delivered a precise, controlled strike to her sternum.

The impact drove the breath entirely from Marlene’s lungs. The knife clattered uselessly onto the granite counter. Elias gripped her shoulder, spun her around, and slammed her face-down onto the kitchen island with enough force to rattle the hanging copper pans.

Captain Miller stepped in immediately, ratcheting heavy steel cuffs around Marlene’s wrists.

"Marlene Vance, you are under arrest for attempted murder, aggravated child abuse, and domestic assault," Miller recited grimly. "You have the right to remain silent."

"You ruined my family, you military bastard!" Marlene screamed against the stone counter, spitting saliva. "You’re nothing! You’re nothing without that uniform!"

Elias ignored the venom. He walked past her to the pantry door.

The heavy wooden door was latched from the outside with a brass security bolt that Claire had installed months ago under the guise of child-proofing. Elias reached out, his hand trembling for the first time that night, and slid the bolt back.

He opened the door.

There, curled into a tight ball beneath the lowest shelf among broken glass and spilled peach preserves, was Lily. She was shaking violently from cold and shock, her hands clamped over her ears, tears tracing clean paths through the dried chemical residue on her cheeks.

Elias sank to his knees. The tactical hardness vanished from his expression, replaced by a devastating, tender agony.

"Lily-bug," he whispered.

The little girl slowly uncurled her hands. She blinked through swollen, red-rimmed eyes. When she saw his face, when she recognized the silver eagle on his collar and the warm brown eyes of her father, a broken sob tore from her chest.

"Daddy?" she cried. "You came back! You broke the sky!"

"I promised you, didn't I?" Elias choked out, scooping her up into his arms.

He pulled her against his chest, wrapping his heavy arms around her shivering frame. He didn't care about the vinegar and kerosene soaking into his clothes. He buried his face in her damp hair, rocking her as she buried her face into his neck, clinging to his shirt with tiny, white-knuckled fists.

May you like

"You're safe," Elias murmured against her temple, his voice thick with unshed tears. "Daddy’s here. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again. Nobody."
