Chapter 10 - The Hammer of Justice

The preliminary hearings at the Frank Crowley Courts Building three months later drew international media attention.
The Robles name, once spoken with reverence in country club parlance, had become synonymous with cowardice and aristocratic depravity.
Carmen sat at the defense table dressed in an orange county jail jumpsuit, her hair streaked with gray, her vanity thoroughly stripped away. Without her designer clothes and luxury jewelry, she looked ancient, hollowed-out, and bitter.
Next to her sat Javier, his eyes cast down at the wooden table, unable to meet the gaze of the packed gallery.
Across the courtroom, Sofia sat between Elena and Alexander. She wore an elegant dark blue suit. Her bruises had healed completely, leaving behind an aura of fierce, unshakeable maturity.
The presiding judge, an iron-willed veteran of the Texas criminal bench, reviewed the mountain of evidence submitted by the state prosecutor—supplemented by the forensic dossiers compiled by Alexander’s private team.
“In my thirty-two years on this bench,” the judge said, his voice echoing through the silent courtroom, “I have rarely encountered an act of such calculated, cowardly cruelty. To bring six accomplices into a bridal suite to beat a young woman for financial extortion is an abhorrent stain upon this community.”
The judge turned his furious gaze upon Javier.
“Javier Robles. As an officer of the court, you swore an oath to uphold the law. Instead, you stood guard while your own wife was assaulted. You are a disgrace to the legal profession.”
The gavel struck the sound block.
*“On the counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Criminal Extortion, Carmen Robles is sentenced to twenty-five years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, without possibility of parole for fifteen years.”*
Carmen gasped, slumping forward in her chair, a pathetic, strangled wail escaping her throat.
*“On the counts of Complicity to Aggravated Felony Assault and Federal Wire Fraud, Javier Robles is sentenced to twelve years in federal custody, alongside an order of full restitution totaling three point eight million dollars.”*
The gavel struck again.
The six female accomplices did not escape judgment. Under separate plea agreements negotiated under the crushing pressure of Alexander’s civil lawsuits, each received five years of supervised probation, massive community service hours in domestic violence shelters, and civil judgments that stripped them of their personal fortunes.
As the bailiffs stepped forward to escort Carmen and Javier away through the side security doors, Javier looked back one final time, his eyes pleading desperately with Sofia.
Sofia didn't even blink. She reached out, took her father’s hand in her left, her mother’s hand in her right, and smiled.

The door slammed shut. The nightmare was legally, permanently over.
