Chapter 8 - The Public Reckoning

By mid-afternoon, Carmen and Javier had retreated to their Highland Park mansion, locking the wrought-iron gates, desperately trying to salvage whatever liquid cash remained. But the gates offered no sanctuary.
Parked outside along the manicured curb were three local news broadcast vans from CBS Dallas, NBC, and WFAA.
Alexander had not relied solely on the courts. He understood that monsters like Carmen Robles derived their lifeblood from social vanity. To destroy them completely, they had to be stripped naked before the public eye.
At 3:45 PM, the premier society blog in Dallas, followed by the *Dallas Morning News*, published an explosive investigative report:
**"BLOOD ON THE VEIL: HIGHLAND PARK SOCIALITE AND ATTORNEY SON ACCUSED OF WEDDING NIGHT TORTURE EXTORTION."**
Embedded directly into the article was the hotel hallway surveillance footage obtained by Alexander’s legal team through an emergency court subpoena. The video was crystal clear. It showed Javier leaning casually against the suite door, adjusting his cufflinks while muffled screams could be heard from inside. It captured Carmen emerging from the room, wiping blood off her diamond bracelet with a hotel washcloth, laughing with her circle of accomplices.
The internet erupted.
Within minutes, the story trended nationally. Protestors began gathering outside the gates of the Highland Park mansion, holding signs denouncing domestic violence and demanding immediate arrests.
Inside the mansion, the electricity abruptly shut off. The utility company, acting on months of unpaid commercial bills flagged by Alexander’s audit, had pulled the grid connection.
Javier sat in the darkened living room, his phone lighting up with hundreds of death threats, vile comments, and messages from former colleagues disowning him.
“Mom, we have to run,” Javier wept, his voice hysterical. “We have to take the car and drive to Mexico. They’re going to kill us!”
Carmen stood by the grand window, peeking through the heavy silk drapes at the flashing media cameras and the angry crowds outside. Her hair was wild, her makeup smeared with sweat and terrified tears.
“The car is gone, Javier,” she whispered blankly.
Down in the driveway, two flatbed tow trucks had just backed through the open front gates, escorted by private repossession agents carrying default warrants for both the Mercedes S-Class and Javier’s Porsche.

The castle had fallen. The walls had crumbled. There was nowhere left to run.
