Chapter 9 - The Final Desperation

At 7:00 PM, darkness descended upon Dallas once more.
A battered rideshare vehicle pulled up two blocks away from Elena’s apartment complex in East Dallas. Two figures slipped out of the backseat, wearing hooded coats and dark sunglasses in a pathetic attempt to disguise themselves.
It was Carmen and Javier.
Driven completely insane by the total destruction of their lives in less than twenty-four hours, Carmen’s mind had snapped into a dangerous, feral corner. She genuinely believed that if she could confront Sofia face-to-face—if she could threaten Elena directly—she could force them to drop the civil injunctions and sign an affidavit recanting the police reports.
“We just need her signature on the recantation,” Carmen muttered under her breath, her fingernails digging into Javier’s arm. “If she tells the police it was a marital misunderstanding, the media dies down. Alexander will have to back off.”
“Mom, this is crazy,” Javier whimpered, trembling like a leaf. “Her father has guards! He’s dangerous!”
“Her father is an arrogant billionaire who thinks money solves everything!” Carmen hissed. “Sofia is weak! I broke her last night, and I will break her again tonight!”
They slipped through the pedestrian gate of the apartment complex and rushed up the concrete stairs toward Elena’s second-floor unit.
Carmen reached the door and began hammering on the wood with both fists.
“Sofia! Open this door right now!” Carmen shrieked, all sanity abandoned. “Elena, open this door or I swear to God I will burn this entire building to the ground!”
The door didn't open.
Instead, the lights along the breezeway suddenly flared into blinding brightness.
Heavy footsteps echoed from both sides of the corridor. Four uniform Dallas Police officers, flanked by two armed SWAT detectives, rounded the corners with weapons drawn.
“Carmen Robles! Javier Robles! Step away from the door and place your hands on your heads! Do it now!”
Carmen froze, her breath catching in her throat.
The apartment door behind her unlocked with a quiet, solid click.
Elena stepped out first, her arms crossed, her eyes blazing with absolute contempt. Behind her stood Alexander, calm and towering, an unmovable wall of authority.
And then, Sofia stepped into the light.
She wore a simple black sweater. Her face was still bruised—the purples and yellows stark against her pale skin—but her chin was held high. She did not tremble. She did not look away.
Javier dropped to his knees again, tears streaming down his face. “Sofia! Sofia, please! Tell them! Tell them it was a mistake! I love you, Sofia! Please save me!”
Sofia walked past her father and mother, stopping just behind the line of police officers. She looked down at Javier, the man she had promised to cherish until death, and felt nothing. Not hatred, not grief—only a cold, clean disgust.
She reached into her pocket, pulled out the sparkling diamond engagement ring, and dropped it onto the concrete floor right in front of Javier’s face. It bounced once, rolling into the dirt by his knees.
“You aren't a man, Javier,” Sofia said, her voice clear, steady, and loud enough for every officer to hear. “You’re a parasite. And your mother is a coward.”
“You little ungrateful whore!” Carmen lunged forward, her fingers curved into claws, aiming straight for Sofia’s throat.
Before she could take two steps, the lead SWAT officer slammed Carmen against the brick wall, twisting her arms behind her back with brutal precision. The metallic snap of handcuffs echoed like a gunshot in the narrow hallway.
“Carmen Robles, you are under arrest for aggravated assault, felony extortion, and criminal conspiracy,” the officer barked, forcing her down.
Carmen screamed, thrashing against the bricks, cursing Sofia, Elena, and Alexander with every vile word her venomous mind could summon. But nobody was listening.
Across the breezeway, Javier was shoved facedown onto the concrete, his hands cuffed behind his back, sobbing like a child as his face was pressed into the dirt next to the ring he had used to deceive her.

Sofia turned her back on them both and walked back into her mother’s home.
