Chapter 8 - The Severed Cord

Evelyn rose from her chair, her presence towering and severe. "Eleanor, you are trespassing in a private law firm. Leave before I have the building security throw you onto the pavement."
"Shut up, Evelyn!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking. She turned to me, tears streaming down her heavily powdered cheeks. "Clara, look at what you’re doing! Your father is having chest pains. Arthur’s career is destroyed. The partners are demanding his immediate resignation from the firm. Is this what you wanted? To destroy your own flesh and blood over one moment of temper?"
I stood up, walked around the mahogany desk, and looked my mother directly in the eyes.
"One moment of temper?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet. "He struck my daughter. He struck Gigi. She is two years old, Mom. She trusted him. When he hit her, she looked at him with sheer terror. And do you know what you did?"
Eleanor swallowed hard, her lips trembling.
"You told me I was ruining a birthday party," I continued, every word landing like a surgical strike. "You looked at your granddaughter's swollen, bruised face and you worried about the cake. You worried about the balloons. You worried about Arthur's comfort."
"We were protecting the family!" Eleanor sobbed. "We have always protected the family!"
"No," I said, shaking my head with utter disgust. "You weren't protecting the family. You were protecting an abuser. You spent thirty years enabling a monster because you were too proud to admit you raised one. You sacrificed Marianne. You sacrificed Arthur's college victims. And yesterday, you tried to sacrifice my daughter."
I took a step closer, watching her flinch.
"I am not Marianne. I cannot be bought. I cannot be intimidated. And I will never, ever let you or Arthur near Gigi again."
"Clara, please..." Eleanor whispered, reaching out a trembling, manicured hand. "He’s your brother."
"Arthur is a violent predator facing felony charges," I said coldly. "And you are his accomplice. Evelyn, call security."

Two building security guards entered the office thirty seconds later. As they escorted Eleanor out the double doors, she looked back at me, her eyes hollow, realizing for the very first time that the Vance name no longer possessed the power to command obedience.
