Chapter 4 - The Legal Firewall

Evelyn arrived carrying two heavy leather briefcases and a thermos of black coffee. At sixty-one, she possessed the same angular jawline as my father, but her eyes lacked his calculating coldness; instead, they burned with fierce, unyielding resolve.

She walked directly into the nursery, stood over Gigi’s crib for two full minutes in total silence, and gently touched the hem of the blanket. When she turned back to me in the hallway, her jaw was clamped shut so tightly that the muscles in her cheeks twitched.

"Julian has spent forty years believing money is an absolute shield against accountability," Evelyn said, sitting down at my kitchen table and spreading out legal forms. "He believes that because he controls the family trust and the family business, he controls reality itself. He forgets that Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 209A does not care about his net worth."

"What’s the strategy, Evelyn?" I asked, setting down two mugs.

"We file for an emergency temporary restraining order first thing at 8:30 AM at Brookline District Court," Evelyn explained, her pen circling clauses on the petition. "We cite child endangerment, assault and battery on a minor, and domestic abuse. We request an immediate stay-away order covering your home, Gigi’s daycare, and your workplace. Arthur cannot come within five hundred feet of either of you."

"And when my father unleashes his legal team?"

"Let them try," Evelyn said with a cold, predatory smile. "Your archive is immaculate, Clara. The Dartmouth settlement. The Marianne audio recordings. The timestamped photographs of the handprint. When we submit this evidence, we aren’t just asking for a protective order; we are creating a public record that no high-priced corporate fixer can seal behind closed doors."

Suddenly, the headlights of an SUV swept across my living room window.

Tires crunched over the gravel driveway. A car door slammed with violent force.

Evelyn glanced up, her eyes narrowing. "Are you expecting anyone?"

"No," I replied, my pulse surging.

I walked to the foyer, looked through the smart security camera monitor mounted by the door, and felt the temperature in the room drop to absolute zero.

Standing on my porch under the amber porch light were my father and mother. My father’s coat was unbuttoned, his face dark with fury, while my mother stood beside him, clutching her crocodile-skin handbag like a weapon.

Behind them, leaning casually against the hood of a black Mercedes SUV, was Arthur.
