Chapter 3 - The Echoing Phone

By 6:30 PM, my phone had accumulated forty-seven missed calls and dozens of text messages. I sat in the living room of my quiet suburban home, double-locking the deadbolts and setting the alarm system before sitting down on the sofa. Gigi was finally asleep in her crib, a cold compress having reduced the swelling just enough for her to drift off without crying out in pain.

I placed my phone on the coffee table, opened the speakerphone, and listened to the voicemails.

The first was from my mother. Her tone was sharp, dripping with aristocratic condescension.

*"Clara, this histrionic behavior is beneath you. You took a child’s tantrum and turned it into an unforgivable spectacle. Arthur was correcting her. Did he use poor judgment? Perhaps. But to storm out like a martyr and threaten to ruin our standing in the neighborhood? Delete whatever silly photos you took and come back to the house immediately. We have guests here."*

The second was from my father. His voice was heavy, authoritative, and laced with suppressed fury.

*"You listen to me, Clara. If you contact the Brookline police, you are finished in this family. Do you understand the implications for the firm’s upcoming municipal bond issue if Arthur is implicated in a domestic disturbance? You will march back here, you will apologize to your brother for your outburst, and we will handle this internally. Do not test my patience."*

The third was a text message from Arthur himself.

*‘Nice drama, Clara. Little rat needed to learn not to grab things that don’t belong to her. You want to play games? Call the cops. Dad’s lawyers will have you looking like an unfit mother before lunch tomorrow. Watch your step.’*

I didn’t cry. I didn’t panic. Instead, I plugged my phone into my laptop, exported the audio files and screenshot captures directly into the police evidence portal Officer Marcos had provided, and sent a duplicate copy to Evelyn Vance.

Evelyn was my father’s estranged younger sister—a veteran family court attorney who had severed ties with Julian thirty years ago after refusing to participate in his fraudulent trust restructuring. If there was one person in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts who understood the predatory rot of the Vance dynasty, it was Aunt Evelyn.

Her phone rang twice before she picked up.

"Clara," Evelyn’s gravelly, razor-sharp voice echoed through the line. "I saw the email notifications hit my inbox ten minutes ago. Tell me that photograph of Gigi isn't what I think it is."

"Arthur struck her in front of the entire family," I said plainly. "Dad and Mom are threatening to destroy my custody if I don't recant."

There was a long, chilling pause on the line. When Evelyn spoke again, her voice was deathly calm.

"I am drafting an ex-parte emergency restraining order right now," Evelyn said. "I will be at your house in twenty minutes. Clara, lock your doors. Tomorrow morning, we are burning their fortress to the ground."
