Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Foundation

By 9:00 AM the following morning, Brookline District Court was swarming with activity.

Judge Margaret Thornton presided over the emergency hearings. She was a no-nonsense jurist known for her uncompromising stance on domestic violence and child welfare. When Evelyn handed the clerk the thick manila envelope containing our petition, the room fell silent.

"Your Honor," Evelyn began, standing tall at the petitioner's table. "We are requesting an immediate, ex-parte order of protection against Arthur Vance. Included in the filing are certified medical records from Boston Children's Hospital confirming blunt force trauma to a two-year-old child, photographic evidence taken immediately following the incident, and audio recordings of the respondent’s admitted conduct."

Judge Thornton reviewed the medical photographs. Her mouth thinned into a tight, disgusted line. She adjusted her glasses and read the attending physician's report word for word.

"Is the respondent present?" Judge Thornton asked, scanning the courtroom.

From the back row, a man in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit stood up. It was Richard Sterling, my father’s lead corporate defense attorney.

"Your Honor, I represent Arthur Vance," Sterling said smoothly, stepping toward the bar. "This is a tragic domestic misunderstanding blown completely out of proportion by an estranged family member seeking leverage in an ongoing trust dispute. Mr. Vance denies any intentional wrongdoing. We request a continuance to allow proper discovery."

"Denied," Judge Thornton snapped without hesitation. "Counselor Sterling, look at these photographs. This is a clear, distinct adult handprint on an infant’s face. This is not a 'misunderstanding'; this is child abuse. I am granting the emergency order of protection immediately. The respondent, Arthur Vance, is ordered to surrender any licensed firearms to the Brookline Police Department within four hours. He is prohibited from coming within one thousand feet of the petitioner, the minor child, their home, and the child’s educational facilities. Any contact—direct, indirect, or via third party—will result in immediate arrest."

Sterling's composed facade cracked. "Your Honor, Mr. Vance is a managing director at Vance Capital. A restraining order will severely impact his professional duties—"

"Then Mr. Vance should have considered his professional duties before striking a two-year-old baby," Judge Thornton said coldly. "The order is signed. Step down."

Outside the courtroom, Evelyn and I walked into the sunlight. But our fight was far from over.

"Phase two," Evelyn murmured, tapping her briefcase. "The corporate board."

Within an hour, copies of the restraining order, accompanied by a formal whistleblower complaint detailing the decades-long misuse of Vance Capital corporate accounts to settle Arthur’s personal legal liabilities, were hand-delivered to every member of the executive board and the primary institutional investors.
