Chapter 6 - A Web of Poison

"Code blue! Room 614, Code blue!"
The ICU erupted into chaos. Nurses and emergency technicians burst through the door, wheeling a crash cart loaded with defibrillator paddles and epinephrine. Adrian was shoved backward toward the wall, his face pale with sudden, paralyzing terror.
Through the crowd stepped Dr. Malcolm Voss.
His surgical coat was immaculate, his stethoscope draped neatly around his neck. His eyes flicked to Naomi for a fraction of a second—a cold, reptilian acknowledgment—before turning to the resuscitation team.
"Step aside, Dr. Evans," Voss commanded with absolute authority. "I am the primary physician. Patient has a documented history of severe arrhythmia. Administer two milligrams of atropine immediately."
"Dr. Voss, her rhythm isn't bradycardic, she’s in ventricular fibrillation!" the resident yelled over the wail of the alarm. "We need to shock!"
"I said administer the atropine!" Voss’s voice cut like a scalpel. He reached into his own coat pocket, withdrawing a pre-filled syringe with a distinct amber collar. "I will handle the central line."
Naomi recognized that syringe. It was the same amber-collared delivery system described in Marcus Vale’s toxicology notes—the synthetic compound that paralyzed diaphragmatic respiration while mimicking an irreversible cardiac arrest.
"Don't let him touch that line!" Naomi shouted, lunging forward.
Before she could take two steps, Adrian’s guards seized her by both arms, twisting her backward against the doorframe.
"Get this lunatic out of here!" Adrian screamed, tears spilling over his cheeks as he watched his mother’s body convulse on the mattress. "Get her out of my sight!"
"Adrian, he’s killing her! Look at the syringe!" Naomi fought against the guards’ iron grip, kicking fiercely, but they hauled her out into the bright corridor.
Down the hallway, leaning gracefully against the reception counter in an elegant black cashmere coat, stood Celeste Arden.
She was sipping from a paper coffee cup, watching Naomi’s struggles with a faint, mocking smile playing at the corners of her lips. As the guards dragged Naomi past, Celeste leaned in close, her breath warm against Naomi’s ear.
"You really should have left at six, Naomi," Celeste whispered so softly only Naomi could hear. "Now Evelyn dies, Adrian signs the estate over to me by sunrise, and you... you will be charged with trespassing and tampering with critical medical equipment."

Celeste stepped back, her expression instantly melting into a mask of pure, tragic grief as Adrian stumbled out of the room behind them, sobbing into his hands.
