Chapter 4 - The Whisper in the Dark

"Evelyn, please," Naomi whispered urgently, taking the elderly woman’s cold hand. The skin felt like dry parchment over bird bones. "You have to wake up. They’ve declared you incompetent. Celeste has Adrian in the palm of her hand. She’s going to take everything."
The monitor’s rhythm spiked—*beep-beep-beep*—rising from fifty beats per minute to eighty. Evelyn’s fingers twitched, feebly tightening around Naomi’s wrist with surprising strength.
Her eyes cracked open. They were clouded, swimming in the fog of heavy narcotics, but behind the glaze burned the unmistakable fire of the Vale family’s ferocious instinct for survival.
"N... Naomi..." Evelyn’s voice was a rasp through the plastic cup of the mask.
"Don't strain," Naomi urged, adjusting the mask slightly. "Dr. Voss used a synthetic peptide. It won't show on standard toxicology. He’s going to authorize Celeste to pull your life support or transfer you to a private sanitarium before the week is out."
Evelyn shook her head weakly. A tear traced the deep crevice of her cheek, cutting through the hospital pallor. "Adrian... my foolish... blind boy..."
"Adrian believes her, Evelyn. He thinks you suffered a stroke. He thinks Celeste saved you by calling the paramedics."
Evelyn swallowed hard, her throat bobbing against the monitors taped to her neck. "The study... desk..."
"I found Marcus’s envelope," Naomi answered quickly. "I have the codicil. But it isn't signed. Without your signature or Marcus’s living testimony, the court will validate Adrian’s transfer of attorney to Celeste by tomorrow afternoon."
Evelyn’s gaze hardened. She pulled Naomi closer, bringing her ear inches from her lips. "Not... the codicil," the old woman breathed, each syllable costing her agony. "The drawer... false bottom in Marcus’s cigar humidor. Key... inside the grandfather clock’s pendulum weight. Safe deposit box... Three-Eight-Nine... at Banque Privée."
"What's in the box, Evelyn?"
"The video," Evelyn choked out, her pulse monitor alarming with a sharp warning tone. "Marcus... had hidden lenses installed in his study before he died. He recorded... her giving him... the tea."
The realization struck Naomi like an electric shock. Marcus hadn't just suspected Celeste; he had captured his own murder on tape.
