Chapter 5 - The Blind Heir

"What do you think you’re doing in here?"
The voice was cold, sharp, and laden with privilege. Naomi jerked upright, releasing Evelyn’s hand as the door swung wide.
Adrian Vale stood in the threshold. His designer suit was wrinkled from hours of hospital pacing, his tie loosened, and his eyes bloodshot with grief and exhaustion. But behind the grief, Naomi saw the dangerous, unyielding arrogance he had inherited from his father.
Behind him stood two armed guards.
"Naomi?" Adrian’s brow furrowed in sudden disbelief, then twisted into dark fury. "Celeste warned me you’d try to come here. What did you do to my mother? Why is that monitor alarming?"
"Adrian, listen to me," Naomi said, standing her ground between him and the bed. "Your mother didn't have a natural stroke. Look at her jaw! Look at the contusions beneath her cheekbones! Celeste held a pillow over her face in the conservatory this morning!"
Adrian stepped into the room, his fists clenching at his sides. "You're insane. You are an employee who has lost her mind because you were caught stealing from the estate!"
"Is that what Celeste told you?" Naomi pulled the folded laboratory document from her pocket and held it out. "Read this! Marcus was poisoned. Your father didn't die of a random heart attack. Celeste Arden is Elena Ross—Malcolm Voss’s former surgical assistant from Switzerland!"
Adrian didn't even look at the paper. With a violent swipe of his forearm, he slapped the document from her hand, sending it fluttering across the linoleum.
"Enough!" Adrian snarled. "Celeste has been by my side every day for two years! She found my mother collapsed on the floor and administered CPR until the ambulance arrived! The doctors said another three minutes and my mother would be dead. Celeste saved her life, and you dare accuse her of murder because you're bitter about being dismissed?"
"Adrian... no..." a faint, choked voice emerged from the bed.
Adrian froze, his eyes widening as he looked at Evelyn. "Mother?"
May you like
He moved toward the bed, but before he could touch her, Evelyn’s eyes rolled back into her head. The heart monitor flatlined into a continuous, deafening shriek.
