Chapter 10 - The Confrontation at the Manor

"Shoot her, Malcolm," Celeste said quietly, walking toward the grand liquor cabinet to pour herself a crystal tumbler of scotch. "We don't have time to indulge her moralizing."

"Wait," Naomi said, her voice steady and deliberate.

Voss’s finger hovered over the trigger. "Last words are an indulgence for the innocent, Naomi."

"You think I stayed here just to watch a video?" Naomi asked, looking directly into Celeste’s eyes.

Celeste paused, the crystal decanter hovering above her glass. Her smile faded slightly. "What are you talking about?"

"When I was at the hospital, I knew you’d follow me here," Naomi said, slowly using her left hand to slide Marcus’s old desk phone toward the center of the blotter. The speakerphone light was glowing a steady, brilliant green. "The mansion’s private internal line connects directly to the audio system in the master guest suite down the hall."

A shadow moved in the doorway behind Voss.

Adrian stood there, drenched in rainwater, his hair plastered to his forehead, his face bone-white. Behind him stood two senior detectives from the state homicide division, their badges pinned to their wet trench coats, their weapons drawn and leveled at Voss’s back.

Adrian’s eyes were wild, unhinged with grief and horrific realization.

"Adrian..." Celeste whispered, her voice cracking, dropping the crystal tumbler. It shattered violently against the parquet floor, splashing amber liquid across her white trousers.

"I heard everything," Adrian whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could barely form the words. "The speakerphone... she called my mobile fifteen minutes ago and left the line open."

Celeste took a step toward him, her face instantly reshaping into a look of desperate innocence. "Adrian, darling, no—listen to me! She’s framing us! Voss was coerced! I did this to protect you—"

"Shut up!" Adrian roared, a raw, guttural scream of absolute agony that echoed through the entire mansion. "You killed my father! You poisoned my mother!"

"Drop the weapon, Dr. Voss!" the lead detective shouted, stepping forward with his service weapon locked on the doctor. "Hands in the air! Do it now!"
