Chapter 9 - Whispers in the Capital

While Sterling Manor basked in the quiet peace of afternoon sunlight, seventy miles away in Washington, D.C., the political shockwaves of Vanessa Vale’s arrest were hitting high-profile offices with the force of an earthquake.
In a private, soundproofed dining room overlooking Capitol Park, Senator Richard Vance—no relation to the Providence enforcer—slammed his fist down onto a mahogany table, rattling the fine china and spilling his scotch across the linen tablecloth.
“Are you out of your mind?” the Senator hissed, glaring across the table at his chief political strategist. “How did Evan Whitaker’s name get attached to a federal indictment involving the Marini syndicate? I was assured his domestic setup in Connecticut was a distraction, not a landmine!”
The strategist, a nervous middle-aged man adjusting his tie frantically, swallowed hard. “Senator, nobody anticipated Whitaker would walk away from his international shipping front to play groundskeeper in his own yard. When the audit hit Vanessa’s foundation, it triggered a cascading data trail. The Feds didn't just find charity skimming—they found wire transfers linking our PAC donations directly to Marini front companies through Vanessa’s accounts.”
Senator Vance’s face turned an ugly shade of purple. If federal prosecutors connected his senatorial campaign funds to the Providence syndicate through Vanessa’s shell corporation, his political career—and potentially his freedom—would evaporate overnight.
“We need to contain this,” Vance snarled, pacing toward the window. “Reach out to the District Attorney’s office. Find out what evidence they’ve actually processed from that estate.”
“We can’t, sir,” the strategist whispered, his voice trembling slightly. “The moment Evan Whitaker’s legal team filed their asset forfeiture cross-petition, the entire file was classified under federal racketeering protection. Regular judges can't touch it. It’s sitting on the desk of the Attorney General’s special task force.”
Vance froze. The name Evan Whitaker carried a heavy, terrifying weight in circles that didn't appear on public tax returns. Long before Evan sat on charity boards in Greenwich, his organization had controlled the logistical lifelines of half the Northeast corridor. He had stepped back into legitimacy, yes—but a sleeping dragon does not appreciate having its children poked with a stick.
“Get me a burner phone,” Senator Vance ordered, his voice dropping into a tense, desperate whisper. “I need to speak directly to Don Marini before his people do something stupid and draw Whitaker’s full wrath down on all of us.”

The strategist paled even further. “Sir... Marini’s clean-up crew was dropped off at a police precinct in Providence this morning. The whole crew. Federal marshals have them under maximum security.”
The glass of scotch slipped from the Senator’s hand, shattering against the floor as the chilling reality finally set in. They weren't dealing with a corrupt socialite anymore. They were dealing with a man who had already checkmated them before they even realized the game had begun.
