Chapter 19 - Roots and Branches

The anniversary of the day Evan returned home in disguise approached quietly, marked not by a grand public gala, but by a quiet family dinner in the west garden.

The dining table was set under the open evening sky, surrounded by string lights and the sweet fragrance of blooming autumn roses. There were no politicians, no reporters, no society elites—just Evan, Sophie, Caleb, and Grace.

Sophie was laughing loudly as Caleb dropped a piece of bread into the grass, immediately swarmed by three eager robins that pecked at the crumbs while the little boy clapped his hands in absolute delight.

Grace sat across from Evan, passing a platter of roasted vegetables down the table. “You know, looking at them now, it’s hard to remember how terrified they were six months ago.”

“Children are resilient,” Evan said softly, raising his glass of sparkling cider in a silent toast. “Provided someone is willing to stand in front of the storm.”

“You didn't just stand in front of it, Evan,” Grace replied, holding his gaze with quiet sincerity. “You pulled the storm apart with your bare hands.”

Evan looked down at his calloused hands—the same hands that had once held an underworld syndicate together, the same hands that had gripped pruning shears in a faded denim shirt while watching his family suffer in silence. He closed his fingers gently around his glass, feeling the cool condensation against his skin.

“Never again,” Evan murmured, the promise carrying an absolute, unshakeable weight that echoed across the garden.

Sophie noticed them talking and ran over, throwing her arms around Evan’s neck from behind, almost knocking him off his chair.

“Daddy, come play tag with us before dark!” she pleaded, her eyes shining with absolute joy.

Evan set his glass down, stood up, and scooped her up into his arms with a booming laugh that startled the robins in the nearby trees. “Alright, alright! But if I catch you, you have to eat your vegetables tomorrow!”

As Evan chased Caleb across the manicured lawn with Sophie riding on his shoulders, Grace watched from the table, a profound sense of peace settling over her chest. The groundsman had finished his work. The weeds were gone, the soil was rich, and the family tree was finally growing strong and deep into the earth.
