Chapter 10 - Shadows Lengthen

Back at Sterling Manor, the evening shadows began to stretch long and deep across the manicured lawns, painting the white marble terrace in hues of amber and violet.
Evan stood on the veranda, holding a cup of black coffee as he watched Sophie and Caleb playing near the old oak tree in the front garden. Grace stood a few paces away, supervising the children while organizing a stack of newly delivered school enrollment forms for the upcoming academic year.
“They’re going to need a normal routine,” Grace said quietly, walking over to stand beside Evan at the stone railing. “Real schools, real friends, real schedules. No bodyguards hiding in the bushes—at least, not visibly.”
Evan took a slow sip of his coffee, his hazel eyes following Sophie as she chased a butterfly across the grass. “Agreed. For too long, their entire world revolved around Vanessa’s social calendar and the paranoia of keeping up appearances. It ends now.”
“You know Senator Vance’s name popped up on the financial audit logs Marcus decrypted from Vanessa’s personal server an hour ago,” Grace mentioned casually, not looking at him, her voice steady and controlled.
Evan didn't flinch. His expression remained completely flat, though a cold, sharp glint flickered in his hazel eyes. “Vance thinks he can launder syndicate money through a Greenwich charity board and hide behind senatorial immunity.”
“What are you going to do?” Grace asked, turning her head to look up at him. “You’re out of the game. You built a legitimate empire. If you go after a sitting U.S. Senator, the political blowback will be massive.”
Evan turned slowly, resting his coffee cup on the stone railing. He looked down at Grace with a calm, unreadable expression.
“Grace, I didn't step back from the underworld because I grew soft,” Evan said softly, his voice carrying the weight of a man who had written the rules others only whispered about. “I stepped back because I wanted my children to grow up in the light. But if someone tries to cast a shadow over my family again... I don't care if they sit in the Senate or the White House. I will dismantle everything they’ve built, brick by brick, until there’s nothing left.”
Grace held his gaze for a long moment, seeing the absolute, unyielding resolve burning beneath his calm exterior. She offered a small, knowing nod.
“Then I guess Senator Vance is about to learn a very hard lesson,” Grace murmured.
Just then, Caleb let out a joyful squeak from across the lawn, running toward them with his tattered brown rabbit trailing behind him in the grass, while Sophie jogged up behind him laughing.

Evan’s stern expression vanished instantly, replaced by a warm, genuine smile as he crouched down to scoop both children into his arms, lifting them up effortlessly as they giggled and buried their faces in his shoulders.
The storm in Washington was brewing, but inside Sterling Manor, the sun was shining brighter than it had in years. The groundsman had reclaimed his home, and no power on earth was ever going to take it away from him again.
