Chapter 16 - Shadows Fade

In a maximum-security holding facility fifty miles outside of Manhattan, the reality of her new existence had finally begun to settle over Vanessa Vale.

Stripped of her designer clothes, her jewelry, and her endless supply of social invitations, she sat in a stark, fluorescent-lit holding room, staring at a concrete wall. Her legal counsel had already informed her that a plea deal was entirely off the table; the federal prosecutor’s office had airtight documentation of her financial crimes, her extortion attempts, and her collaboration with the Providence syndicate.

Worse still, her brother Julian was cooperating fully with federal investigators in exchange for a reduced sentence, handing over every encrypted message and offshore account password she had trusted him to guard.

The door clicked open, and a prison guard stepped in, tapping his baton against the metal table. p“Time’s up, Vale. Back to your block.”

Vanessa didn't move for a long moment. She slowly looked up into the reflective glass of the interview partition, seeing the hollow, exhausted reflection of a woman who had traded everything for control—and ended up with nothing.

She had tried to build an empire of fear, forgetting a fundamental truth of the world she had tried to conquer: dynasties built on intimidation always crumble when the real master returns.
