Chapter 9 - The Meeting in the Interrogation Room

Three days later, Emily sat in a small, windowless visitor room at the county detention facility. Across the metal table sat Daniel.

He was barely recognizable. He wore the standard orange jumpsuit, his eyes were bloodshot and ringed with dark circles, and his hands trembled as he kept them pressed flat against the steel surface. When Emily entered, he looked up with a mixture of desperate hope and profound terror.

"Emily," he whispered, his voice hoarse. "Thank God. Thank God you came."

Emily sat down, setting a slim leather folder on the table between them. She did not speak; she simply looked at him with an expression of quiet, forensic curiosity, as if examining a specimen under glass.

"I am so sorry," Daniel began, the words tumbling out in a frantic, rehearsed torrent. "I was stressed, Emily. The market was crashing, the business was under immense pressure, and my mother was constantly in my ear demanding things I couldn't provide. I lost control. It was an aberration! You know me—I love you! I’ve loved you since the day we met!"

"You didn't love me, Daniel," Emily said, her tone utterly flat. "You loved the fact that I didn't demand the spotlight. You loved having a wife you thought was too timid to question your fake invoices, too humble to overshadow your ego, and too weak to fight back when you used her as a punching bag."

"That’s not true!" Daniel pleaded, tears leaking down his stubbled cheeks. "We had good times, Emily! Remember our trip to Lake Como? Remember our wedding vows?"

"Our wedding vows included honoring and protecting each other," Emily said, leaning forward slightly. "Not dragging each other by the roots of their hair across a kitchen floor to impress sixty shallow narcissists."

Daniel flinched as if struck. He lowered his head, his chest heaving with silent sobs. "What do you want from me? What do I have to do to make this stop? Rebecca Vance filed twenty-two felony charges against me. The bank is foreclosing on my office. I’m facing ten to fifteen years in state prison, Emily! Fifteen years!"

"You aren't going to make it stop, Daniel," Emily said calmly, opening the leather folder.

She turned the pages toward him.

"These are your uncontested divorce papers. You will sign over every claim to any shared marital property. You will surrender all rights to the Sovereign Ridge subsidiary shares you fraudulently registered in your name. And you will execute a full confession of judgment regarding the 1.4 million dollars you embezzled."

Daniel stared at the documents, his breath coming in shallow gasps. "If I sign this... will you drop the criminal charges?"

"No," Emily replied without hesitation.

Daniel jerked back. "Then why the hell would I sign it?!"

"Because if you sign it, I will instruct Rebecca Vance not to forward the offshore tax evasion evidence to the Internal Revenue Service," Emily said, her voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "If you cooperate, you serve your five to seven years for state battery and corporate fraud, and you get out before you turn forty-five. If you refuse, I hand the federal prosecutor the shell company files Marcus Cole discovered in the Cayman accounts. You will be indicted under federal RICO statutes, your sentences will run consecutively, and you will not see the outside of a federal penitentiary until you are an old man."

Daniel stared at her, his jaw slack, the last shred of his defiance dissolving into absolute terror.

He looked at the pen resting on the table. It was a simple black ballpoint, but to Daniel, it looked like the blade of a guillotine.

With shaking fingers, he reached out, picked up the pen, and signed his name on every line Emily pointed to.
