Chapter 3 - The True Deed

Margaret swept through the front double doors, her silk gown rustling like dry leaves. Her face was flushed with anger at the commotion interrupting her spotlight.
"What is the meaning of this circus?" Margaret snapped, looking down her nose at the uniformed deputies and Rebecca Vance. "Daniel, stand up! Why are you groveling on the floor like an idiot? Officers, I demand you remove these people immediately. This is private property, and I am Margaret Whitmore!"
Captain Miller didn't flinch. "Ma'am, step back and keep your hands where we can see them."
"How dare you!" Margaret gasped, turning her venom toward Emily. "You! You useless little ingrate! I send you out for the birthday roast, and you bring a pack of strangers to harass my family? Daniel, deal with your wife before I have her thrown into the street without a cent!"
Rebecca Vance took a single step forward, opening the leather portfolio.
"Mrs. Margaret Whitmore, for the record, you do not own a single square inch of this estate," Rebecca announced, her voice carrying cleanly through the open doors and straight into the silent, listening dining room.
The sixty guests had gathered near the entrance, frozen in morbid fascination.
"Lies!" Margaret shrieked. "This manor has been in the Whitmore family for generations!"
"The Whitmore family lost this estate to foreclosure seven years ago, following your late husband’s bankruptcy," Rebecca continued, pulling a series of certified deeds bearing the state seal. "The property was purchased at sealed auction by Sovereign Ridge Capital, a private holding trust established by Emily Ward under her family’s legacy fund. Emily allowed your son to live here under a tenancy-at-will agreement to protect his public reputation when you convinced him his career required an aristocratic facade."
A horrified murmur swept through the gathered guests. Margaret’s friends—the very socialites she had spent years looking down upon—stared with open mouths.
"You... you’re making this up," Daniel croaked, scrambling up from the ground, his face slick with cold sweat. "Emily doesn't have that kind of money. She grew up in a modest house upstate! She consults for small businesses!"
"She consults for *her own* portfolio, Mr. Whitmore," Rebecca replied coolly. "A portfolio currently valued in excess of eighty-five million dollars. And as of forty-five minutes ago, the tenancy-at-will agreement for this residence has been revoked due to breach of lease conditions—specifically, commission of violent felonies on the premises."
Emily stepped forward, looking directly at her mother-in-law.
"You wanted sixty dishes, Margaret," Emily said calmly. "You wanted sixty reminders of what you thought I was worth. But every meal you’ve eaten in this dining room for three years was paid for by my accounts. The wine you toasted with tonight was bought with my money. Even the dress on your back was charged to a card backed by Sovereign Ridge."
Margaret clutched her pearl necklace, her eyes darting frantically toward her son. "Daniel! Tell her she’s insane! Tell these people to leave!"

Daniel couldn't speak. His throat worked silently as his eyes darted from Rebecca Vance to the armed deputies, and finally to Emily’s face—a face that no longer held the warmth, patience, or forgiveness he had exploited for over a thousand days.
