Chapter 8 - The Gala of Ruin

The grand ballroom of the Phoenician was draped in silver chiffon and illuminated by cascading crystal chandeliers. Over three hundred members of Arizona’s financial and social elite mingled, sipping champagne and congratulating themselves on their philanthropy.
Gwen Vance had pulled off a miracle of deceit to be there.
Using an old physical invitation card that had not yet been electronically cross-referenced, and wearing a vintage gown she had kept in a storage locker from her late husband’s era, she had slipped past the secondary registration desk. She wore thick makeup to conceal the dark bags under her eyes and held her head high, pretending to any acquaintance who asked that she was merely staying at a resort while her Paradise Valley mansion underwent “extensive interior renovations.”
“Eleanor, darling!” Gwen chimed, approaching a circle of influential women by the central ice sculpture. “The floral arrangements are divine this year, aren't they? I personally advised the committee on the orchids.”
Eleanor, a woman whose family owned three copper mines, turned around and leveled a cool, dissecting gaze at Gwen.
“Gwen,” Eleanor said, her voice polite but razor-sharp. “We were surprised to see you. There were rumors circulating that the Thorne-Vance Foundation had withdrawn its patron pledge.”
Gwen laughed, a shrill, nervous sound. “Absurd! Completely fabricated gossip! You know how jealous some people get of Christian and Sienna’s success. We are funding the keynote endowment as promised. In fact, I am scheduled to introduce the gift tonight.”
At that moment, the chime for the keynote address sounded. The lights dimmed slightly, and the massive projection screens at the front of the stage flickered to life.
The Chairman of the Valley Social Guild took the podium.
“Ladies and gentlemen, honored patrons,” the Chairman announced warmly. “Tonight, our premier hundred-thousand-dollar educational endowment comes courtesy of an extraordinary corporate leader who has demonstrated exemplary resilience, integrity, and philanthropic vision. Please welcome the Vice President of Global Logistics at Thorne International—Ms. Sienna Thorne.”
Gwen’s heart plummeted into her stomach. *Thorne? Not Thorne-Vance?*
The double doors at the side of the stage swung open. Sienna stepped into the spotlight. She was breathtaking. Dressed in a midnight-blue velvet gown with diamonds glittering at her throat, she carried herself with absolute sovereignty. The ballroom erupted into enthusiastic applause.
Gwen moved toward the side of the stage, her mind racing. *If she embarrasses me here, I’ll make a scene! I’ll show everyone she’s a cold-hearted climber who abandoned her husband!*
Sienna reached the microphone, smiling serenely as the applause subsided.
“Thank you, Chairman, and thank you to the patrons of the Valley Social Guild,” Sienna began, her voice carrying through the crystal-clear audio system. “Tonight, I am proud to announce that Thorne International is donating two hundred and fifty thousand dollars directly to the Children’s Crisis Center.”
A wave of gasps and thunderous applause washed through the hall.
“However,” Sienna continued, her tone shifting into something clear, measured, and lethal. “This donation is being made solely under my family’s ancestral trust—the Thorne Foundation. I must officially clarify that the entity previously known as the ‘Thorne-Vance Foundation’ has been legally dissolved due to financial malfeasance, embezzlement, and irreconcilable breaches of ethics by individuals who falsely claimed to represent its values.”
The ballroom went deathly quiet. Heads began turning. Whispers rippled through the tables.
Gwen took an involuntary step forward, her face burning with humiliation. “Sienna! Stop this!” she hissed from the shadows near the stage curtains.
Sienna did not look at her. Instead, she gestured to the technician booth.
“Integrity is not simply a word we use at galas,” Sienna said clearly. “It is demonstrated by how we treat human beings behind closed doors. When those who live on another’s generosity believe that entitlement grants them the right to demand, demean, and physically assault their benefactor... that illusion must be permanently dispelled.”
The massive presentation screens behind Sienna lit up.
It was not a charity slide. It was a formal public notice from the Maricopa County Superior Court: a certified copy of the felony domestic violence restraining order against Gwen Vance, accompanied by the high-resolution still capture of the surveillance footage showing Gwen’s hand striking Sienna across the face.
The entire ballroom gasped in unison. Eleanor and Beatrice covered their mouths in horror.
Two armed security guards moved swiftly through the wings of the stage, flanking Gwen before she could retreat.
“Mrs. Vance,” the security captain said loudly enough for the front five tables to hear. “You are violating a legal protective order by being within five hundred feet of Ms. Thorne. Furthermore, you are trespassing on private event grounds.”
“Get your hands off me!” Gwen screamed, losing all sanity as her social world disintegrated before her eyes. “She’s a liar! She ruined my son! She ruined my family! She owes me thirty thousand dollars!”
The patrons stared in utter disgust as Gwen Vance, the self-proclaimed grand dame of Paradise Valley, was dragged backward through the service exit, shrieking, flailing, and kicked out into the rainy Scottsdale night in front of the valet queue.
Sienna stood at the podium, unruffled, elegant, and completely untouched.

“Now,” Sienna said with a warm, steady smile, “let us turn our attention to the children who actually need our support.”
