Chapter 5 - The Collateral Damage

By midnight, the Vance family had retreated to a rundown two-star motel off Interstate 17, paid for using the desperate maxing-out of Chloe’s emergency credit card from her college days.
The room smelled of stale tobacco and industrial bleach. Gwen sat on the edge of the polyester bedspread, still clutching her designer handbag like a flotation device. Christian paced the cracked linoleum floor, biting his fingernails until they bled, while Chloe sat in the corner, sobbing hysterically.
“My friends saw the repossession on Instagram!” Chloe screamed, shoving her phone into Christian’s face. “Someone took a video of your car being towed and posted it with the caption ‘Vance Family Fraud Exposed’! The girls at the sorority are laughing at me! Sienna cancelled my spring trip to Cabo! Christian, fix this! You’re her husband, tell her she has to take care of us!”
“Shut up, Chloe!” Christian roared, slamming his fist against the laminate desk. “You think I haven't tried? She blocked my number! She blocked my email! She notified the board of Thorne International that I was using corporate accounts for unauthorized family expenditures! My regional supervisor called an hour ago—I’m suspended pending a forensic audit!”
Gwen looked up, her eyes wild with malice. “We will sue her. Yes! We will sue her for half of everything she owns! You were married to her for five years, Christian! In this state, community property is divided fifty-fifty! We will take the Paradise Valley house, we will take her investment portfolio, and we will take her executive bonuses! She thinks she can discard us like garbage? We will leave her penniless!”
Christian dropped his head into his hands. A dry, pathetic sob escaped his chest.
“What?” Gwen demanded. “What is it?”
“There is no fifty-fifty, Mom,” Christian whispered.
Gwen froze. “What are you talking about?”
“The prenup,” Christian said, his voice trembling. “Before we got married... her corporate lawyers made me sign a comprehensive separate-property agreement. I waived all rights to her pre-existing assets, her trust, her stock options, and any real estate purchased under her LLCs. In exchange, she agreed to let me live with her and manage her domestic accounts.”
“You idiot!” Gwen shrieked, lunging off the bed and striking Christian’s chest with her fists. “You signed away our future? You told me you held the power in that marriage!”
“You told me to sign it, Mom!” Christian shouted back, shoving her away. “You said she was an idiot who would just keep giving us money anyway! You said as long as we kept her feeling guilty about not being a traditional housewife, she would finance our lives forever! You’re the one who slapped her today over your stupid vanity! If you hadn’t laid a hand on her, she would have transferred your thirty thousand tomorrow!”
The silence that settled over the motel room was suffocating.
Gwen slowly sank back down onto the bed. The harsh fluorescent lighting revealed every line of age and desperation carved into her face. The thirty-thousand-dollar monthly check was gone. The private luxury was gone. The illusion of high society had shattered into dust.

And thirty miles away, in the calm silence of her executive suite, Sienna was just getting started.
