Chapter 9 - The Siege of Moretti Manor

Dawn never truly arrived; it was swallowed by bruised, heavy clouds and the relentless drumming of rain.
The first explosion ripped through the western security gates at precisely 5:42 AM.
Elena bolted upright in the king-sized bed, Lorenzo already on his feet, naked from the waist up, racking the slide of an assault rifle before the sound of the blast had even faded.
“Lorenzo!” Elena cried, throwing back the silk sheets and rushing to Mia’s crib. Mia awoke with a scream of terror as the mansion’s klaxons began to wail their deafening, rhythmic alarm.
“Carmine brought mercenaries,” Lorenzo said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he threw a tactical vest over his chest and tossed a sleek Glock pistol onto the mattress in front of Elena. “The Commission betrayed me. Carmine convinced them I was compromised by federal ties through Mateo.”
“They’re here for us,” Elena said, her hands shaking as she racked the slide of the Glock with practiced precision. Mateo had trained her well. She strapped Mia into a heavy-duty tactical chest carrier, securing her daughter tightly against her front, and pulled a dark jacket over them both.
“They will have to walk over my corpse,” Lorenzo declared. He crossed the room, grabbed Elena by the back of the neck, and pulled her into a fierce, bruising kiss. “Stay in the panic room behind the wine cellar. Gianni is waiting on the service stairs. Do not stop for anyone.”
“Lorenzo, don't die!” Elena pleaded, grabbing his tactical vest. “Mia needs you! *I* need you!”
A fierce, triumphant smile lit up Lorenzo’s dark eyes. “The Devil doesn't die in his own house, Elena. Now run!”
Elena bolted through the concealed doorway into the service corridors as Lorenzo kicked open the main penthouse doors, unleashing a hail of automatic gunfire into the mercenary assault squad advancing down the hallway.
The mansion had become a slaughterhouse. Gunfire echoed through the marble corridors, shattering family portraits, splintering mahogany furniture, and shredding crystal chandeliers into glittering rain.
Elena raced down the spiral stairs, Mia sobbing quietly against her chest. “Shh, baby, mama’s got you, stay down,” Elena whispered through gritted teeth, her gun held high.
As she reached the bottom landing near the wine cellar, a figure stepped out from the shadows.
It was Bianca, holding a pearl-handled revolver, her face twisted in hysterical triumph.
“Look at you,” Bianca spat, raising the gun. “A common maid running through our halls like a rat. Carmine is going to take Lorenzo’s head, and I am going to have the pleasure of executing Mateo Rivera’s little whore.”
Bianca pulled the trigger.
Elena reacted on pure maternal instinct. She twisted her body, using her own shoulder to shield Mia. The bullet tore through the flesh of Elena’s upper left arm, a bolt of white-hot agony that nearly brought her to her knees.
Mia screamed.
Elena didn't hesitate. Ignoring the blinding pain in her arm, she brought her Glock up with her right hand and fired twice.
The bullets struck Bianca in the center of her chest. The revolver slipped from Bianca’s fingers as she crashed against the stone wall, sliding down into a lifeless heap, her eyes staring blankly into the shadows.

Elena clutched Mia tighter, blood soaking through her jacket sleeve, and pushed through the heavy steel door of the wine cellar.
