Chapter 8 - The Viper Strikes

The mansion was placed on lockdown, but the poison ran deeper than the perimeter walls.
Midnight arrived with a thunderstorm that rattled the bulletproof glass of the penthouse suite. Elena stood by the bed, smoothing Mia’s hair. The child had slept through the gunshot, exhausted from the day’s tension.
Lorenzo walked into the bedroom, having shed his bloodstained shirt. A fresh bandage covered a graze on his forearm from a scuffle during the courtyard evacuation.
“You should have let me kill Carmine tonight,” Elena said softly, not turning around.
Lorenzo paused, watching the gentle rise and fall of Elena’s shoulders. “A public execution of a family elder requires Commission sanction. If I had executed him at the table, the five families would have united against us. I needed him to run. A running animal always makes a fatal mistake.”
Elena turned to face him. Her velvet gown was unzipped slightly at the back for comfort, revealing the smooth expanse of her olive skin. “He knows Mia isn't yours, Lorenzo. He called her another man’s bastard. He’s going to dig until he finds the truth about Mateo.”
Lorenzo stepped closer, his dark eyes ablaze with an intensity that took Elena’s breath away. “It doesn't matter whose blood created her, Elena. She is mine now. Because you are mine.”
“Lorenzo...” Elena breathed, her defenses crumbling as he closed the distance between them.
Lorenzo reached out, his large hands cupping her face with a reverence that contrasted wildly with the violence he had displayed downstairs. “For three years, I thought my soul died in the fire with Mateo. I was an empty shell, a machine built for killing and running an empire. But the moment you looked into my eyes with that broken glass in your hand, the moment your daughter climbed onto my chest... you gave me back my humanity.”
Elena’s eyes filled with tears. She leaned into his touch, her hands coming up to rest against his bare, scarred chest. She felt the heavy, steady thud of his heart beneath her palms.
“I was so angry at you,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “I blamed you for Mateo’s death. I spent every night hating you.”
“Hate me if you must,” Lorenzo murmured, leaning down until his lips hovered a fraction of an inch from hers. “Punish me every day. But let me protect you. Let me love you.”
Elena surged upward, closing the gap between them.
Their lips collided in a passionate, desperate kiss that tasted of danger, relief, and undeniable fate. Lorenzo groaned into her mouth, his arms wrapping around her waist, lifting her effortlessly as he pressed her against the wall. Elena tangled her fingers in his thick dark hair, surrendering completely to the fierce hunger consuming them both.
For a brief, shining hour in the dark heart of the mafia compound, the world ceased to exist. There were no traitors, no blood feuds, no ghosts of the past—only the searing heat of two broken souls finding salvation in each other’s arms.
Downstairs, in the darkness of the subterranean archives, Bianca Moretti used a stolen master key to open the vault.
With trembling, venomous hands, she bypassed the secondary locks and located Elena’s personal file, which Lorenzo had transferred to his private safe. Tucked inside was the classified federal autopsy report of Mateo Rivera, complete with photographs and DNA markers matching Mia Rivera.
Bianca smiled in the dark, snapping a picture on her phone and sending it directly to Don Carmine.
