Chapter 11 - The Empire Claimed

Three months later, the Moretti estate had been completely restored, though the atmosphere had changed forever.
The dark, imposing mausoleum of marble and shadows was now filled with sunlight, white lilies, and the sound of children's laughter.
In the grand ballroom, five hundred guests stood in absolute, respectful silence. The heads of the remaining crime families of the Eastern seaboard, federal judges, city officials, and high-society elites packed the pews, their heads bowed toward the altar.
Lorenzo Moretti stood tall in a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, an aura of undisputed sovereign authority radiating from his imposing frame. But his eyes were fixed solely on the double doors at the end of the aisle.
The organ swelled.
The doors opened, and Elena appeared.
She took the collective breath of the room away. She was dressed in an off-the-shoulder gown of pure ivory lace that hugged every breathtaking curve of her body, flowing into an eight-foot train of hand-stitched silk. Her dark hair was piled atop her head in elegant curls, secured by a diamond tiara that had belonged to the queens of Sicily. On her upper arm, a faint, pale scar was visible—a badge of honor she wore without shame.
Walking in front of her as the flower girl was Mia, dressed in a miniature matching ivory gown, happily tossing red rose petals onto the carpet, occasionally eating one before Elena softly scolded her with a radiant smile.
When Elena reached the altar, Lorenzo stepped down to take her hand. His grip was warm, strong, and reverent.
“You look like an empress,” Lorenzo whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
“And you look like a man who finally found his peace,” Elena whispered back, her amber eyes shining with tears of joy.
The priest spoke the sacred vows, but neither Lorenzo nor Elena needed the words written in the book. Their vows had already been forged in blood, smoke, and sacrifice.
“With this ring,” Lorenzo said, slipping a flawless ten-carat emerald-cut diamond onto Elena’s finger, “I give you my empire, my protection, and my soul. Whatever is mine is yours. Your enemies are my enemies, and your daughter is my blood. Unto death, and beyond.”
Elena placed a band of hammered black platinum on Lorenzo’s finger. “With this ring, I give you my heart, my trust, and my life. You brought us out of the shadows, Lorenzo. You gave me back a future.”
“By the power vested in me,” the priest announced, “I present to you Don Lorenzo and Donna Elena Moretti.”
The applause shook the foundations of the cathedral. Lorenzo cupped Elena’s face and pulled her into a deep, sweeping kiss that sealed their fate before God and the underworld alike.
That evening, the celebration lasted until the stars filled the sky over Long Island.
Upstairs in the master suite, away from the music and the clinking champagne glasses of the banquet hall, the room was dimly lit by the embers of a roaring stone fireplace.
Lorenzo sat in his deep leather armchair, his bowtie undone and his tuxedo jacket draped over the back.
Mia, exhausted from hours of being adored by dignitaries and pampered with wedding cake, stood before him in her soft flannel pajamas. She rubbed her eyes and tugged at the fabric of his trousers, exactly as she had done three months ago in the middle of that fateful summit.
“Mister Renzo?” she murmured sleepily.
Lorenzo leaned down, a warm, genuine smile lighting up his rugged face. He scooped her up in one smooth motion, settling her securely against his chest.
“What is it, little fox?”
Mia rested her cheek against his lapel, wrapping her small arms around his neck.
“Can I sleep on you forever?”
Lorenzo’s throat tightened. He brushed a soft curl away from the little crescent scar behind her ear, pulling the soft velvet throw blanket over her shoulders.
Elena walked in from the adjoining terrace, wearing a flowing white silk robe, a soft smile playing upon her lips as she leaned against the arm of his chair, resting her hand on Lorenzo’s broad shoulder.

Lorenzo looked up at his wife, then down at the daughter Mateo had gifted them both.
“Yes, Mia,” Lorenzo whispered, kissing the top of the little girl’s head as her breathing slowed into peaceful slumber. “Forever. You and your mother will never sleep in fear again.”
