Chapter 6 - A Daughter's Laughter

The morning sun broke through the tall glass windows of the estate’s private courtyard, casting golden beams across the cobblestones.

For the first time in her life, Mia was running across a manicured lawn without Elena frantically telling her to be quiet. Dressed in a brand-new pink dress delivered by courier at dawn, Mia chased a monarch butterfly with pure, unfiltered joy.

Lorenzo sat at an iron patio table, an espresso cup untouched before him, surrounded by classified security reports. But his eyes weren't on the papers. They were glued to the little girl tumbling into the soft clover.

“Careful, little fox,” Lorenzo called out instinctively, his body half-rising from the chair as Mia tripped over her own shoelace.

Mia rolled over, sat up, and let out a bright, bell-like giggle. She jumped up and sprinted straight toward Lorenzo, slamming her tiny hands onto his slacks.

“Mister Renzo! Look! A yellow leaf!” She presented a crumpled dandelion with absolute triumph.

Elena walked out onto the patio carrying a fresh pot of coffee, wearing a tailored cream-colored dress that hugged her hourglass silhouette in a way that made Lorenzo’s jaw tighten. She paused, watching the scene before her.

Lorenzo Moretti—the man whose name made governors tremble and cartel bosses beg—solemnly took the bruised weed from the toddler's hand.

“It is a magnificent specimen,” Lorenzo said with utmost gravity, carefully tucking the dandelion into the lapel pocket of his three-thousand-dollar suit, right where a silk pocket square usually rested.

Mia beamed, climbing onto his lap without hesitation. She patted his scowling, bearded cheek with her sticky fingers. “You’re a good mister.”

Elena swallowed the lump in her throat as she approached the table. She set the coffee down, her eyes meeting Lorenzo’s. “You shouldn't let her ruin your clothes.”

“She isn't ruining anything,” Lorenzo said, his gaze shifting from the child to Elena. His eyes darkened with raw appreciation as he took in the sight of her in the dress he had selected. “You look breathtaking, Elena.”

A blush crept up Elena’s neck. “I feel like an imposter. The servants are whispering. Bianca was watching from the terrace earlier; she looked like she wanted to poison my breakfast.”

“Bianca is a snake without venom,” Lorenzo dismissed coldly. “Her father, however, has requested an emergency sit-down tonight at the grand estate dining hall. He claims he wants to celebrate my ‘miraculous reunion’ with my hidden family.”

Elena’s heart seized. “Carmine knows?”

“He suspects,” Lorenzo replied, shifting Mia so she sat comfortably against his forearm. “He wants to test us. He will bring his capos, his enforcers, and his sharpest interrogators disguised as dinner guests. They will look for cracks in our story. They will look for fear.”

Lorenzo stood up, Mia cradled effortlessly in his arm, and stepped close to Elena. He reached out, smoothing a stray curl from her forehead, his touch lingering against her warm cheek.

“Can you play the part, Elena?” he asked softly, his eyes searching hers. “Can you look at me as if you belong to me?”

Elena looked up into the rugged, dangerous beauty of his face, feeling the intense gravity of his presence. Her pulse raced, not with fear, but with a wild, terrifying desire she hadn't felt in years.

“I won't have to act very hard, Lorenzo,” she whispered honestly.

A slow, devastating smirk curved Lorenzo’s lips. “Good. Because tonight, we show them that touching my family means total annihilation.”
