Chapter 8 - The Law and the Ledger

By 9:45 a.m., the sound of approaching sirens was deafening.
Not the single siren of a local patrol car, but a motorcade of federal authorities. Black-and-white cruisers from the State Police, unmarked Suburbans belonging to the FBI, and two vehicles from the District Attorney’s Special Victims Unit rolled up the long, curving driveway.
Richard Vale finally descended the stairs. The family patriarch looked as though he had aged twenty years in twenty minutes. In his trembling hands, he carried a folder of stock certificates and land deeds.
"Luca," Richard whispered, his voice cracking. "Please. Vincent and I... we had an understanding thirty years ago. We were friends."
Luca stood up from the table. He towered over the older man, his expression completely devoid of mercy.
"My father is dead, Richard. And you watched his daughter get beaten like an animal while you poured yourself a glass of twenty-year-old scotch."
"I didn't know—"
"You knew," Luca said. "You approved the whip. You told Adrian to make sure she didn't bleed on the antique Persian rug."
Richard’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.
The glass doors of the conservatory opened, and Special Agent Miller of the FBI walked in, flanked by two armed agents and the chief prosecutor of the Southern District of New York.
"Adrian Vale?" Agent Miller asked, displaying his badge.
Adrian was still on the floor, his broken wrist cradled against his ribs, tears and snot smearing his designer shirt. "Officer... officer, arrest these men! They broke into my house! They assaulted me! Look at my wrist!"
Agent Miller didn't even look down at Adrian's injury.
"Adrian Vale, you are under arrest for federal civil rights violations, felony torture, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and interstate wire fraud," Miller stated coldly. He held up a thick warrant. "We have the raw footage from last night, corroborated by four independent witnesses and the digital forensic logs provided by the Moretti Group."
Two agents hauled Adrian to his feet. As the steel cuffs clicked around his unbroken wrist, Adrian twisted around, his eyes wide and frantic, searching for his mother.
"Mom! Call Judge Sterling! Call him now!"
Eleanor Vale was already in handcuffs. A female agent was reading her Miranda rights while escorting her out of the room. Marcus was weeping openly, dragged between two state troopers, his designer loafers scuffing uselessly against the marble.
"You can't do this to me!" Adrian screamed, his voice breaking into a shriek as he was shoved toward the door. "I'm Adrian Vale! Anna! Anna, tell them! Tell them it was a domestic misunderstanding! Anna!"
I stood in the doorway of the foyer, a black cashmere blanket draped gently over my shoulders, Marco standing steady at my side.
Adrian stopped as he reached me, held in place by the federal agents. His face was a ruin of terror, disbelief, and ruined pride.
"Anna... please," he begged, tears carving pale tracks through the dust on his cheeks. "I was wrong. I was stressed about the business. Vanessa manipulated me! You’re my wife! You promised to stay with me through better and worse!"
I looked at him. For three years, I had believed that if I were gentle enough, quiet enough, and patient enough, this man would see my worth. I had hidden my family’s name because I wanted to be loved for myself, not feared for my brothers.
What a foolish, beautiful girl I had been.
"My wedding vow was to a partner," I said, my voice steady, clear, and quiet. "Not an executioner. Goodbye, Adrian."

The agents pushed him forward, out into the flashing red-and-blue lights that painted the grand facade of Vale Manor.
