Chapter 2 - The Five Wolves Assemble

Thirty miles south, within the fortified glass-and-steel penthouse overlooking the Brooklyn Navy Yard, five men stood around a circular obsidian desk.

The monitors mounted against the exposed-brick walls did not display stock tickers or television news. They showed raw tactical feeds, live satellite imagery, banking clearinghouses, and encrypted municipal databases.

Luca Moretti hung up his phone, laid it face down on the desk, and turned to face his brothers. At thirty-eight, he carried himself with the austere poise of a corporate CEO and the ruthless command of an old-world Don. His bespoke charcoal suit was buttoned, his cuff links polished silver wolves.

"She’s hurt," Luca said simply.

The air in the room instantly dropped several degrees.

Matteo, the second eldest, was already pulling on black tactical gloves. A veteran of private military contracting in Eastern Europe, his six-foot-four frame was built of scar tissue and hard muscle. Behind him sat Dante, thirty-two, the digital ghost who ran their cybersecurity and surveillance empire; his fingers were already flying across three mechanical keyboards simultaneously.

"How bad?" Matteo’s voice was a low growl.

"Thirty strikes. Leather quirt. Ordered by Adrian, encouraged by his mistress, recorded by his younger brother Marcus," Luca stated evenly. "Adrian’s mother Eleanor cheered. Richard Vale poured champagne."

Dante let out a sharp, joyless laugh that sounded like dry twigs snapping. "I just breached the Vale Manor local Wi-Fi hub. Marcus Vale backed up twenty minutes of 4K video files to his private cloud an hour ago. He sent snippets to a group chat titled 'Taming the Help.'"

Matteo stepped forward, his knuckles white against the desk. "I want the brother's fingers. Every single one that held the phone."

"You'll wait for the signal, Matteo," Luca said, his voice dropping into the register of absolute command. "We do not simply break them. Adrian believes he is an empire builder. He believes our sister was a defenseless charity case he plucked from obscurity. If we merely shoot him, he dies thinking he was an innocent victim of street violence. He must watch his entire life crumble to ash before he understands why."

Leo, thirty, the financial architect who commanded their venture capital funds and hedge networks, stepped forward with an open tablet. "Vale Global Logistics is leveraged to the hilt on the Atlantic Freight expansion. They hold forty-two million dollars in short-term credit notes due on the fifteenth. The primary creditor is Vanguard-Apex."

Luca looked at him. "Who owns Vanguard-Apex?"

"We do," Leo replied with a cold grin. "Through seven shell entities in Zurich and the Cayman Islands. If I call the debt due at eight this morning, their operational accounts freeze automatically. They won't have enough liquid cash to pay their office light bill, let alone their harbor dockworkers."

"And the harbor contracts?" Luca asked.

Marco, the youngest at twenty-seven, who managed the family’s vast physical logistics and shipping unions, leaned against the window frame. "The Longshoremen’s Union Local 402 belongs to Vincent Moretti’s sons. The dockworkers haven't unloaded a Vale container without our say-so in ten years; Adrian just thought his city connections were greasing the wheels. If I whisper one word, not a single crate moves through Port Newark or Brooklyn. Their refrigerated pharmaceutical shipments will rot on the tarmac."

"Execute," Luca ordered.

Dante hit a single key. "Cloud files intercepted, decrypted, and mirrored to thirty separate local and federal servers. I've also locked down the manor’s automated security gates from here. Nobody leaves the estate grounds unless we let them."

Luca pulled his heavy wool coat over his shoulders and walked toward the private elevator.

"Bring three medical vans," Luca said over his shoulder. "And Matteo?"

"Yes, Luca?"

"Bring the heavy restraints."
